OpenAI has announced a major promotional offer for users in India, providing free access to ChatGPT Go for one year starting November 4. The limited-time offer aims to accelerate the company’s growth in one of its largest and fastest-expanding markets.
The company confirmed the news but did not reveal how long the promotion will remain available. Existing ChatGPT Go subscribers in India will also be eligible to receive the 12-month free plan, OpenAI said in its announcement.
What ChatGPT Go Offers?
Compared to the free version, ChatGPT Go provides users with 10x more usage for generating responses, creating images, and uploading files. It also includes enhanced memory features that enable more personalised interactions and long-term context retention.
Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, said, “Since initially launching ChatGPT Go in India a few months ago, the adoption and creativity we’ve seen from our users has been inspiring. We’re excited to see the amazing things our users will build, learn, and achieve with these tools.”

ChatGPT Go in India
Launched in August, ChatGPT Go is OpenAI’s most affordable paid subscription plan and is priced at under INR 400 ($5) per month. It was first introduced in India before expanding to Indonesia and later to 16 other Asian markets earlier this month.

India plays a crucial role in OpenAI’s global expansion strategy. With over 700 million smartphone users and more than a billion internet subscribers, the country represents one of the world’s largest potential AI user bases. OpenAI opened its New Delhi office in August and is actively building a local team to strengthen its presence.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously noted that India is the company’s second-largest market after the U.S. However, monetisation remains a challenge. According to Appfigures data, the ChatGPT app generated $3.6 million in in-app purchases during the 90 days leading up to August, despite recording over 29 million downloads in that period.
Competition in India’s AI Market
OpenAI faces increasing competition from rivals like Perplexity AI and Google, both of which are ramping up efforts to attract India’s large youthful user base. Perplexity recently partnered with Airtel to offer free Perplexity Pro subscriptions to its 360 million subscribers. Meanwhile, Google introduced a one-year free AI Pro plan for students in India.
In separate news, OpenAI is set to host its DevDay Exchange conference in Bengaluru on November 4. The company is expected to make several India-specific announcements targeting local developers and enterprises.
