Nothing has introduced a new feature called Essential Voice to improve the speech-to-text experience on its smartphones. This new addition is part of its broader Essential AI suite and here are more details.

Nothing Launches ‘Essential Voice’ Feature

Nothing’s Essential Voice feature addresses the limitations of both typing and traditional dictation.

Smartphone users usually type at around 36 words per minute and it can reach speeds of up to 150 words per minute while speaking. However, both voice notes and standard dictation tools come with drawbacks.

Voice notes can be inconvenient especially in public settings and are not easy to scan for important details. Meanwhile, traditional dictation often results in unstructured text filled with pauses, stutters and filler words.

Essential Voice tackles this by processing spoken input in real-time to deliver clean, well-formatted text combining the speed of speech with the readability of written content.

The feature is deeply integrated into the smartphone’s keyboard and can also be activated by long-pressing the Essential Key. It offers advanced auto-correction and formatting capabilities removing filler words like “ums” and “uhs” while refining sentence structure. Users can also dictate commands to format content into lists, steps, or bullet points.

Another notable feature is Personal Mappings, which allows users to create custom voice shortcuts. By speaking a predefined phrase, the system can automatically insert specific text, templates, or even properly formatted terms such as “Nothing OS.”

Essential Voice also supports over 100 languages with automatic detection, including regional variations like Simplified Chinese and Latin American Spanish. It can also act as a real-time translation tool, converting spoken input in one language into text in another.

Privacy and Data Handling

Essential Voice does not listen passively in the background and only activates when triggered by the user.

Once activated, the audio is encrypted and sent to Nothing’s servers for processing. The resulting text is then returned to the device and the company states that the audio data is not stored after processing is complete.

Availability and Future Plans

Essential Voice is currently available on the Nothing Phone (3). The company has confirmed that the feature will roll out to the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro later this month and followed by the Nothing Phone (4a) in early May.

Nothing plans to enhance Essential Voice with context awareness it to adjust tone and formatting based on the app being used. For instance, distinguishing between a casual message and a professional email.
