Technology has brought ease of doing things in our everyday life. Technology is the most important driver of economic growth of countries, regions and cities. Technological progress allows for the more efficient production of more and better goods and services, which is what prosperity depends on.

The role of technology cannot be overlooked in our daily lives. From helping us to stay organised, connected, healthy, and safe to education and delivery of daily needs, technology has brought the world at your fingertips.

To mark the success, achievements and advancements in the field of technology, National Technology Day is celebrated every year on May 11 in India.

First observed on May 11, 1999, the National Technology Day marks the success of India’s foray into the elite group of countries with nuclear weapons. On 11 May 1998, India successfully conducted three nuclear tests at Indian Army’s Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan under the supervision of late A P J Abdul Kalam, who went on to become India’s eleventh president.

First indigenous aircraft Hansa-3 was also tested on May 11, 1998. Hansa was designed by the National Aerospace Laboratory and took flight in Bengaluru. May 11 also saw the successful completion of test firing of India’s surface-to-air missile Trishul. The tests were conducted by the (DRDO) under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme of India. Later, Trishul was inducted into the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force.

How is National Technology Day celebrated

As part of the National Technology Day celebrations, officials pay honour to scientists of India for their remarkable hard work and achievements. Awards and honours are given to scientists for their significant contributions to the growth of technology.

National Technology Day is also observed to spread awareness about the importance of technology in our lives and how young students could make a difference by opting science and technology as area of studies. Individuals, institutions, and enterprises are awarded by the technological development board for their contribution in technology.

National Technology Day event is celebrated across India and the events are managed by the Ministry of Science and Technology. Department’s ceremony is attended by the President of India. President presents the awards to the recipients for their outstanding contributions to technology. The events are held throughout India and are managed by the Ministry of Science and Technology so that the entire nation may recognise the significance of National Technology Day.

National Technology Day theme

The Technology Development Board (TDB)—a statutory body within the Department of Science and Technology at the Centre—decides the theme and organises the National Technology Day event every year.

The theme for National Technology Day 2022 is “Integrated Approach in Science & Technology for Sustainable Future”. The theme was launched by Union Minister Jitendra Singh.
