Meta is stepping up efforts to fight spam messages on WhatsApp by testing a new monthly restriction on how many messages users can send to people who haven’t replied. The move is part of the company’s ongoing campaign to keep WhatsApp’s 3 billion–plus user base safe from spam and unwanted promotions.
According to TechCrunch, Meta confirmed it will soon begin testing a monthly limit on messages that both users and businesses can send to recipients who do not respond.
The report states, “All messages users and businesses send to others will count against this new per-month limit, unless they get a response. For instance, if you meet someone at a conference and send three messages, that counts against the limit.”
While Meta hasn’t disclosed the exact limit or the countries where the trial will take place, the company clarified that the restriction is aimed at “people and businesses that blast messages and spam people,” not regular users. The testing phase is expected to roll out “in multiple countries in the coming weeks.”
This isn’t the first time Meta has tried to control spam on WhatsApp. Over the past few years, the company has introduced several anti-spam features and safety measures, especially targeting political and commercial spam. These include limits on marketing broadcasts, options to unsubscribe from business communications, and restrictions on sending bulk messages to multiple recipients.
However, such efforts have often been undermined by spammers finding new workarounds.
For businesses that use WhatsApp for customer outreach, this change could prompt a shift toward more genuine and interactive engagement rather than mass messaging. Regular users, on the other hand, can look forward to a cleaner, more personalised inbox experience, free from incessant spam and promotional clutter.
