Meta is giving its AI assistant a significant upgrade by enhancing its memory to make the chatbot more helpful and personalised. The update allows Meta AI to “remember certain details that you share with it in 1:1 chat” and use your activity on Facebook and Instagram to offer tailored suggestions.
Meta shared the details of the new upgrade in a recent blog post titled “Building Toward a Smarter, More Personalized Assistant.” This update will be initially available in the US and Canada only.
According to Meta’s blog, this upgrade enables Meta AI to track preferences and personal details shared during conversations. For instance, if you mention food allergies or dietary restrictions, the assistant will remember them and recommend suitable recipes.
The assistant will also consider details about your personal life and relationships. Meta assures users they can view and delete specific details stored by Meta AI.
In addition, the AI will analyse your Facebook and Instagram activity to improve its suggestions. For example, it might recommend weekend activities based on your location in your Facebook profile or suggest content inspired by the Reels you’ve watched.
Meta’s blog explains, “We’re also rolling out a greater level of personalisation for Meta AI on Facebook, Messenger and Instagram. Delivering great content recommendations is an important part of what makes Facebook and Instagram valuable for people around the globe – and it’s been driven by AI for a while. Now, we’re extending this level of personalization to Meta AI so that your assistant can respond with information that’s relevant for you.”
“Let’s say you’re looking for something fun to do with your family this weekend and you ask Meta AI to suggest something. Based on the home location you’ve listed as part of your Facebook profile, recent views of reels featuring live performances by various country artists and its memory that you have a partner and two young kids, Meta AI might suggest tickets for that weekend’s country music show at your local arena and reservations at a local brunch spot,” it further adds.
A Meta spokesperson noted that Meta’s Help Center clarifies how your profile along with the Facebook and Instagram activity influence recommendations. “Other information from your profile like your age and gender, and interests based on your activity across our products, such as the types of content, including ads, you view or interact with and how you interact with it and may be used to help personalize your interactions with AI,” the Help Center states.
The update comes as the AI industry faces increasing competition. China-based low-budget AI assistant DeepSeek is currently topping Apple’s App Store and has gained immense popularity surprising investors and industry experts.
However, Meta’s Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun dismissed the hype saying, “The market reactions to DeepSeek are woefully unjustified.”
