MediaTek is back with a new budget 4G chip named the Helio G200, but don’t expect big changes. Just like with the recently launched Dimensity 6400, which was nearly identical to the Dimensity 6300, the Helio G200 mostly sticks to the script of its predecessor the Helio G100. It comes with only a few tweaks here and there. Here’s what we know.

MediaTek Helio G200

Under the hood, the Helio G200 keeps the same octa-core setup as the G100. It packs two Cortex-A76 cores and six Cortex-A55 cores, clocked at up to 2.2GHz and 2.0GHz, just like the G100. The GPU is still from the Mali-G57 family, but this time MediaTek says it’s slightly faster, now running at 1.1GHz.

Memory and storage support haven’t changed either. It still handles LPDDR4X RAM up to 4266Mbps and UFS 2.2 storage. Camera and display capabilities are also the same, including support for up to 200MP sensors, multi-frame noise reduction and 12-bit dual conversion gain (DCG) for better HDR video.

The chip can drive a Full HD+ display at 120Hz with MediaTek’s Intelligent Display Sync tech to save power by adjusting refresh rates dynamically.

Meanwhile, MediaTek isn’t directly comparing the G200 to the G100.  Instead, the chipmaker is focusing on how the G200 stacks up against “competitor alternative platforms.”

According to the company, the G200 offers 35% faster AnTuTu scores, 40% better single-core and 20% better multi-core Geekbench scores and 75% faster GPU performance with 30% better power efficiency in gaming.

On the connectivity side, the G200 includes an integrated Cat-13 4G LTE modem with support for dual 4G VoLTE, 4×4 MIMO, 256QAM and global bands. There’s also a new 4G DC SAR feature, which aims to improve messaging and social app performance in weak signal areas.

The Helio G200 is more of a refreshed Helio G100 than a truly new chip. While there are some performance boosts and power tweaks, it almost seems like what we have seen before now just dressed up with updated branding and marketing.
