Apple is reportedly advancing development of a new variable aperture camera system that is expected to debut with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max later this year. According to a report from ETNews, the company has already begun scaling its supply chain for the upcoming camera technology ahead of its anticipated September launch.

Supply Chain Production Details

The report highlights that Apple’s suppliers have already begun working on key components required for the new system. Chinese optics manufacturer Sunny Optical has reportedly started producing actuators that will control the aperture mechanism. Assembly of camera modules is expected to begin in early summer.

The ET News report reads, “China’s Sunny Optical has started manufacturing actuators for Apple’s variable-aperture camera. An industry official with knowledge of the matter said, “The actuator manufacturer has recently started manufacturing parts, and LG Innotech will start manufacturing camera modules around June to July this year.”

Meanwhile, Apple’s major camera partner LG Innotek is said to be preparing for production with operations likely to start around June or July. The company is reportedly installing dedicated manufacturing equipment at its facility in Gumi, South Korea.

Other module manufacturers including Cowell are also expected to contribute to the production process.

Due to the complexity of the variable aperture system, LG Innotek is likely to handle a larger share of the camera module production. A similar situation occurred when Apple introduced the folded tetraprism zoom lens in the iPhone 15 Pro Max where LG Innotek initially served as the sole supplier.

Variable Aperture Technology Explained

With a variable aperture system, the camera gains the ability to adjust how much light enters the sensor. In low-light environments, the aperture can widen to allow more light in improving brightness and detail. In contrast, the aperture can narrow to reduce overexposure during well-lit conditions.

This technology is also expected to provide enhanced control over depth of field enabling more natural background blur and improved photography flexibility.

This feature marks a significant shift for Apple as iPhones have traditionally relied on fixed aperture camera systems. From the iPhone 14 Pro through to the iPhone 17 Pro, Apple has used a fixed ƒ/1.78 aperture for the primary camera, meaning the lens remains fully open during image capture.

Launch Timeline

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to launch around September alongside Apple’s first foldable iPhone.
