It has been hinted multiple times since this year’s iPhone launch that we may be looking at a design overhaul next year. This means the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro series could look totally different. Well, a new report indicates Apple is planning to move away from the two-tone rear look seen on the current iPhone 17 Pro lineup. Here’s what we know so far.
According to a post by Chinese leaker Instant Digital on Weibo, the next-generation models could feature a more unified, seamless back design. This hints that the Cupertino giant might shift its aesthetic approach.
Tipster writes, “The back glass replacement process of the iPhone 18 Pro series can solve the color difference with the aluminum color on the back as much as possible.”
On the iPhone 17 Pro, Apple used a glass cutout at the back to accommodate MagSafe charging. This resulted in a noticeable colour contrast between the aluminium frame and the Ceramic Shield 2 panel. This combination gave the phone its distinctive two-tone appearance.
For the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple is said to be introducing an updated back-glass replacement process that minimises the colour variation between the frame and the glass. This will eventually produce a smoother and more cohesive look.
This claim aligns with an earlier report from another popular Chinese source named Digital Chat Station on Weibo. DCS had mentioned that Apple’s next Ceramic Shield might feature a “slightly transparent design.” That rumour also suggested that the iPhone 18 Pro models will retain a largely similar design to their predecessors, apart from this subtle yet refined visual upgrade.
Instant Digital has a history of accurate leaks including the yellow iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus colour variant and the Titanium Milanese Loop for the Apple Watch Ultra 2. However, the leaker’s record isn’t flawless, so this information should be taken cautiously.
Beyond design, both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to be powered by the A20 Pro chip, built using TSMC’s 2nm process, and will feature Apple’s in-house C2 modem replacing Qualcomm’s hardware. These models are anticipated to debut alongside Apple’s first foldable iPhone in September 2026. But we have to discuss that as well.
Following the introduction of the iPhone Air this year, Apple appears to be planning an even more dramatic shakeup for 2026. Reports from The Information suggest that Apple’s iPhone Air 2, originally set for fall 2026, has been delayed until spring 2027 due to Apple’s decision to add a second rear camera to the model.
Before the delay, Apple was expected to unveil four models in 2026. These were iPhone Air 2, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Fold. However, with the Air 2 postponed, the company’s fall 2026 lineup may include only three devices –
If this holds true, it would be the first time in years that Apple launches fewer than four iPhones in a single fall event. The absence of a base iPhone model would also push the entry-level price up to around $1,099, a significant jump from the usual $799 starting price.
Moreover, the iPhone Fold will be a premium and niche product. This mean it isn’t expected to appeal to the mass market immediately. This leaves the Pro models as Apple’s primary mainstream options.
Answer. Apple may introduce a seamless rear design for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, moving away from the current two-tone look caused by MagSafe cutouts. A refined back-glass process could reduce color contrast between the frame and Ceramic Shield, offering a more unified aesthetic.
Answer. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to feature the A20 Pro chip built on TSMC’s 2nm process and Apple’s in-house C2 modem, replacing Qualcomm’s components.
Answer. With the iPhone Air 2 delayed to spring 2027, Apple’s fall 2026 lineup may include only three models, iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and the new iPhone Fold.
