With the launch of the iPhone 17 series just days away, fresh rumours are pointing to major upgrades for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. According to a new post on Weibo by well-known leaker Instant Digital, Apple’s top-tier models this year will see significant improvements in display performance, thermal efficiency, and battery life. Here’s more on that.
The recent leak on Weibo highlights several changes that could make the Pro models stand out.
Firstly, the displays will be capable of maintaining higher brightness for longer periods when used outdoors in sunlight. This enhancement will also benefit the Camera app, enabling extended 4K 60fps video recording outdoors without thermal throttling.
Next is the improved thermal management will boost frame rate stability during graphics-intensive gaming sessions. Optimised battery efficiency paired with larger battery capacity will deliver what Apple reportedly calls “the longest battery life” ever on an iPhone.
These enhancements are said to stem from Apple’s redesigned thermal and battery systems for the iPhone 17 Pro lineup.
All four iPhone 16 series models were advertised with 2000 nits peak outdoor brightness at the time of launch. This was double the standard 1000 nits typical brightness and higher than the 1600 nits HDR peak. However, the brightness level could only be maintained for a few minutes before dropping significantly due to heat constraints.
So, if the rumoured thermal improvements are accurate, iPhone 17 Pro users may finally see a meaningful difference in real-world outdoor performance.
It’s worth noting that these enhancements are reportedly limited to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The more affordable iPhone 17 Air is not expected to include these upgrades.
Apple is scheduled to announce the iPhone 17 lineup at its “Awe-dropping” event on Tuesday, September 9. All eyes will be on whether these rumoured improvements make their way into the final products.
