iPhone 17 Air Could Be Apple’s Thinnest iPhone Yet, But With Shorter Battery Life, To Include Battery Case

Highlights

  • Report suggests only 60–70% of users of the iPhone 17 Air may get a full day of battery life.
  • To address battery limitations, Apple plans to reintroduce the battery case providing extra power and protection.
  • The phone is expected to have a single rear camera, a single speaker and no physical SIM slot, relying entirely on eSIM.

If you even remotely follow Apple’s rumour circle, you would already know that the upcoming iPhone 17 Air is shaping up to be Apple’s slimmest iPhone ever. However, as speculated by many tech experts, it seems this ultra-thin profile comes with a tradeoff – reduced battery life.

iPhone 17 Air To Have Small Battery Size

According to a report from The Information, only 60–70% of users are expected to get through a full day without needing to recharge the iPhone 17 Air. In comparison, 80–90% of users with other iPhone 17 models will likely get all-day battery.

The main reason isn’t a surprise. The iPhone 17 Air is just 5.5mm thick, making it the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever made.

To make up for the smaller battery, Apple plans to bring back a discontinued accessory, the battery case. The new case will not only add extra battery life but also protect the phone. Apple hasn’t sold battery cases since the iPhone 11 series, instead switching to the MagSafe Battery Pack for newer models, which is now out of stock.

The report reads: “The percentage of users who can go a single day without recharging the thin phone will be between 60% and 70%. For other models, that metric is between 80% and 90%, one of the people said. To solve this, Apple is developing an optional accessory—a phone case meant for the thin model that also contains a battery pack, according to three people familiar with the matter.”

There’s still uncertainty about how well the iPhone 17 Air will sell. Some people might love the fresh, slim design, but others could be turned off by the battery compromises. Because of this mixed outlook, Apple is starting with limited production, only 10% of the total iPhone 17 units will be the Air version.

As for how it’ll feel in real life, case samples based on the iPhone 17 Air’s dimensions have surfaced online. These sample case images were shared by user @LusiRoy8 on X (formerly Twitter) recently.

We haven’t yet seen how the phone looks inside a case, but there’s a chance it could feel as slim as an iPhone 16 Pro without a case, which could be a win for users who want both style and protection.

The iPhone 17 Air will also be lighter, though its larger display may balance out some of the weight savings. For those who like using their phone without a case, the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air could feel great in hand.

But if the case adds back the thickness, the slim appeal might be lost.

iPhone 17 Air – What Else To Expect?

There are also a few more differences. The iPhone 17 Air will have just one rear camera, a single speaker, and no physical SIM slot, relying entirely on eSIM.

The next iPhone series is expected to launch in September 2025.
