Huawei has officially stepped into the foldable laptop space with the launch of the MateBook Fold ULTIMATE DESIGN. It is the first commercial notebook with a folding screen and it isn’t just any foldable. It’s the world’s largest commercial foldable PC featuring a dual-layer OLED display that opens up to 18 inches and folds down to a compact 13-inch size. But there’s more to it than just the screen.

It’s also the first Huawei laptop to run HarmonyOS for PC and to feature the company’s own chip under the hood. So, here’s everything we know about the new piece of tech.
Huawei MateBook Fold ULTIMATE DESIGN – Design and Display
Here’s how special the MateBook Fold ULTIMATE DESIGN is. Once unfolded, you get an 18-inch 3.3K LTPO OLED display in a 4:3 aspect ratio, while folding it transforms the device into a 13-inch 3:2 screen. The panel uses dual-layer OLED tech and supports 1600 nits peak brightness with a dynamic contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1. Huawei has added a carbon fibre support layer to boost impact resistance by three times.

Even with all this tech, the MateBook Fold remains surprisingly lightweight and thin, weighing just 1.16kg and measuring 7.3mm at its thinnest when unfolded.
The device has a leather finish and comes in three colours – Forged Shadow Black, Sky White and Cloud Blue. The black variant stands out with a special “Forging Shadow Cloud Pattern” and a “Black Gold Waistline” design on the back.

A big part of the design is the 285mm folding hinge, which is the largest in the industry, according to Huawei. It uses a three-stage shaft with uniform torque for a smoother and more precise folding experience. The hinge opens in a water-drop shape, which helps reduce screen stress. Huawei claims a 400% boost in hovering torque and twice the spindle machining accuracy.
Thanks to this hinge, the MateBook Fold can stay open at various angles, from fully flat to a stable 150-degree hover, making it flexible for different use cases. The cooling system includes dual fans and a thin anti-gravity vapor chamber to keep things running smoothly.

Under the hood, the MateBook Fold runs on Huawei’s in-house chip, though details are still under wraps. It boots up with HarmonyOS 5 for PC, introducing features aimed at blending mobile and desktop experiences under a “one system, unified ecology” approach.
It supports distributed soft bus interconnection for fast file transfers and smooth multitasking across connected devices with data transfer speeds reaching up to 160MB/s. The system allows up to four devices to connect and interact seamlessly.
You’ll find a range of new touch and gesture controls too. For example, swiping up plays a video, swiping down shows comments, and you can even cast part of the screen while using the rest. There are also unique gestures like five-finger scrolling (“waterfall screen browsing”) and eight-finger taps to launch the virtual keyboard.
