HMD appears to be gearing up for its first new Nokia-branded device under the renewed deal. For those unaware, this is after HMD Global’s recent extension of its licensing agreement with Nokia. According to the latest leaks, this upcoming product could be a second-generation version of the Nokia 800 Tough. Yes, this is the same rugged feature phone that was first launched by the brand back in 2019. Here’s what we know so far.
As per a reliable HMD and Nokia tipster HMD_MEME’S @smashx_60 on X (formerly Twitter), the new device will serve as a successor to the original Nokia 800 Tough. The phone was known for its extreme durability and rugged design. However, the changes in this updated model are said to be fairly minimal.
The X post reveals that the Nokia 800 Tough (2nd Gen) will replace the outdated microUSB port with a USB Type-C connector and run KaiOS 3.1, an upgrade from the KaiOS 2.5.2 version found in its predecessor.
A leaked render of the upcoming model suggests a nearly identical look to the original. It shows the phone featuring a single rear camera, LED flash, and speaker grille on the back. In line with the series’ reputation, the phone is also expected to maintain IP68 water and dust resistance and MIL-STD-810G military-grade durability certification. All these features made the first-gen model stand out among rugged feature phones.
As of now, the pricing and launch details for the new Nokia 800 Tough have not yet been revealed.
The original model was introduced at €110. And if HMD maintains a similar positioning, the upcoming refresh could arrive in the same affordable range, catering to users seeking a durable, no-nonsense feature phone.
For reference, the 2019 Nokia 800 Tough came with a 2.4-inch TFT display, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 205 chipset, paired with 512MB RAM and 4GB internal storage. It featured a 2MP rear camera, along with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS, and a 2,100mAh battery that delivered impressive standby times.
If the leak proves accurate, the Nokia 800 Tough (2nd Gen) will likely be more of a light refresh than a full redesign, offering modest updates while retaining the tried-and-tested rugged appeal of the original.
