The Made by Google 2025 event for the Pixel 10 had plenty of memorable highlights, but one of the most noticeable was Google’s playful approach. The tech giant was confident and did not shy away from continuously poking fun at Apple while showcasing the Pixel 10’s new features and updates.
Hosted by Jimmy Fallon, the event carried a lighter, more confident energy, continuing the Apple-directed humour seen in Google’s teasers leading up to launch.
Right from the start, Google executives dropped subtle (and not-so-subtle) digs. Rick Osterloh referenced Apple’s delayed rollout of Apple Intelligence, saying within minutes of taking the stage.
Osterloh said, “There has been a lot of hype about this, and frankly, a lot of broken promises too. But Gemini is the real deal. We’ve got the best models, we’ve got the best AI assistant, and it means this can just unlock so much helpfulness on your phone.”
He quickly followed up by reminding the audience that Pixel introduced Car Crash Detection back in 2019, years before Apple.
Later, Fallon sat down with Google SVP Adrienne Lofton, who carried the banter forward. Lofton joked about the closed-off approach of “some companies,” contrasting it with Android, which she described as “the most open platform that’s built for true freedom of choice.”
The discussion eventually turned to Pixelsnap, where Lofton boldly stated that the Pixel 10 series will “work perfectly fine with all of your Apple MagSafe accessories.” Fallon humorously referred to this as using “the A-word,” to which Lofton replied with confidence, “we love everybody in the game so we can say anyone’s name we want on this stage.”
She wrapped up the segment with another playful swipe, calling the long-running “green bubble” debate “tired” now that RCS is the norm.
“We realised the idea of switching your phone brand can seem scary. It can even maybe be a little bit daunting. And so we talked about and have tackled the two top concerns that people have when it comes to switching… Thing two is we know that you need to seamlessly communicate with your loved ones. That’s probably the most important thing. …RCS simply means there is now one text standard for all. And what you should know is that Android has been using RCS for many many years, but Apple recently adopted it as well. What does that mean? It means that now when you’re chatting with your i-friends, you can say goodbye to blurry photos and videos, you can react with all the cute emojis to the text messages, and finally the group chat is for the whole group.”
“I want to say, personally, the green/blue bubble battle is silly, and it’s tired. And at Google we’re done with that conversation,” Lofton said.
Before Apple adopted RCS, Google frequently used the green vs. blue bubble divide to pressure Apple with its “Get the Message” campaign. While Apple’s decision may not have been solely influenced by that push, Lofton’s point was clear that the conversation has run its course.
After that, the event shifted focus back to new software features and several celebrity appearances. But by then, Google had already set the tone as confident, bold and unafraid to tease its biggest competitor on stage.
