Google has rolled out its most advanced AI-powered search called AI Mode for users in India. The feature is now available in English as an experimental offering via Google Labs. Here’s everything you need to know about Google Search’s AI Mode.

What is Google Search AI Mode?

AI Mode is built on a custom version of Gemini 2.5 and is designed to handle more complex and layered questions. Unlike traditional search, it gives detailed AI-generated answers, complete with relevant web links and the option to ask follow-up questions.

After a successful run in the United States, where Google says people began asking queries “2–3 times longer than traditional searches,” the company is bringing this next-gen search experience to India.

AI Mode is perfect for tasks like trip planning, product comparisons and step-by-step guides. These are tasks that usually require several separate searches, but AI Mode can handle them all at once.

Built for India – Voice and Visual Input

Google has recognised that users in India love using voice and visual search. More people in India use Google Lens than anywhere else. That’s why AI Mode lets you type your query, use voice command or even upload an image to ask a question.

How Does It Work?

AI Mode breaks the user’s questions into parts and runs multiple searches at once using a method called “query fan-out.” This helps it dig up hyper-relevant content from the web. It also pulls in real-time info from places like the Knowledge Graph and shopping data across billions of products.

To try the new AI Mode in Google Search, you will have to open “labs.google.com”. Then, find and turn on the experiment named “AI Mode.” After this, you will be able to try the feature by clicking on the “Try AI Mode” button.

You can also access AI Mode by clicking on the “AI Mode” tab at the top of the Google search results.

Builds on AI Overviews

AI Mode builds on the success of AI Overviews, which now reaches 1.5 billion people each month. Google says the feature has led to more than 10% usage growth in big markets like India and the US.

While introducing all these upgrades, Google says the goal remains the same and that is helping users discover great web content. AI Mode keeps quality in check using its usual ranking systems and new ways to ensure factual accuracy.
