Google appears to be aligning its upcoming foldable Android phone with the highly anticipated Pixel 9 lineup, according to a recent report.
The company’s next foldable device is rumoured to be branded as the “Pixel 9 Pro Fold,” a shift in the naming strategy from its predecessor.
When Google launched its first Pixel Fold, it arrived during the gap between the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 series launches.
However, information from Google leaker Kamila Wojciechowska suggests that the next foldable may be marketed as the “Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold.”
If the information we’ve seen about the Pixel 9 family of phones is accurate, this would bring the total number of devices in the series to four: the base Pixel 9, a smaller Pixel 9 Pro, the Pixel 9 Pro XL, and now the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
Rumours indicate that the new foldable is built around Google’s upcoming Tensor G4 chipset, which will also power the rest of the Pixel 9 series.
In that sense, the “Pixel 9 Pro Fold” naming convention makes sense, as the second-generation Fold is expected to have similar internals and camera performance as the other Pixel 9 devices.
This naming strategy marks a significant shift from Google’s initial approach with its foldable line.
Previously dubbed “Pixel Fold 2” during its development phase, the renaming to “Pixel 9 Pro Fold” aligns it more closely with its sibling devices, though this name may still change as the product nears completion.
Launching the Pixel 9 Pro Fold alongside the other Pixel 9 models in the fall of 2024 would differentiate Google from competitors, who usually release their foldable models at different times from their main series.
A simultaneous launch of all four devices under the Pixel 9 umbrella is likely to generate significant interest.
However, these are all just rumours for the time being and should be taken with a grain of salt.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is rumoured to be Google’s upcoming foldable smartphone, speculated to be part of the broader Pixel 9 series, which may include three other devices: the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL.
Unlike the first-generation Pixel Fold, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is expected to share more features with the main Pixel lineup, particularly in terms of internal hardware like the Tensor G4 chipset, aligning it closely with the Pixel 9 series.
The device is anticipated to have a foldable design with high-end specifications similar to other Pixel 9 models, including advanced camera systems and the latest Google Tensor chipset.
Leaks suggest that Google might launch the Pixel 9 Pro Fold alongside the other Pixel 9 models in the fall of 2024, aiming for a unified release strategy.
The shift to “Pixel 9 Pro Fold” suggests a desire to integrate the foldable more closely with its flagship range, potentially indicating similar feature sets and a unified branding approach.
