With Google I/O 2024 just around the corner, leaks surrounding the company’s next mid-range smartphone, the Pixel 8a, are painting an increasingly clear picture.
From AI smarts to multi-year software support, here’s a roundup of all the key rumours about the upcoming “a” series device.
Like the Pixel 8 series, the 8a is expected to run on the Android 14 operating system out of the box.
But the real headline could be Google’s rumoured commitment to extended software updates.
According to reports, the Pixel 8a may come with a promise of 7 years of security patches – an unprecedented pledge in the Android space until recently.
However, details around OS update longevity remain unclear.
Artificial intelligence was a major focus area for the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro’s marketing.
If leaks are to be believed, the 8a won’t be left out, inheriting several of the same AI capabilities as its pricier siblings.
These could include Audio Magic Eraser for audio clean-up, Night Sight and Best Take photo enhancement, as well as Call Assist transcription and the handy Circle to Search visual lookup tool.
Under the hood, the Pixel 8a is rumoured to pack Google’s latest Tensor G3 chip – the same silicon powering the standard Pixel 8, albeit in an underclocked, cost-optimized configuration.
Other speculated specs include a 6.1-inch 1440p 120Hz OLED display with 1400 nits peak brightness, up to 8GB RAM, 256GB storage, and a capable dual camera setup led by a 64MP main sensor.
The Pixel 8a is expected to be available in four colour options – Obsidian, Porcelain, Mint and Bay.
Pricing remains a mystery, but if Google’s previous “a” models are any indication, this could end up being one of the better affordable flagship alternatives when it likely goes on sale starting May 16th, just days after its I/O unveiling.
Between the powerful AI chops, extended software lifespan commitment and flagship-caliber internals at a presumed mid-range price point, the Pixel 8a is shaping up to be an enticing proposition for Android purists on a budget.
We’ll know all the official details when Google’s annual developer conference kicks off on May 14th.
