Apple recently unveiled its A17 Pro chipset during the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max announcement. The focal point of discussions has been its enhanced graphical capabilities.
Here’s an analytical look at this new development.
Apple labels the new GPU as “Pro-Class”, indicating a significant shift in mobile graphics. The A17 Pro marks a 20 percent increase in peak graphics performance compared to its predecessor, the A16 Bionic.
Impressively, this increase doesn’t compromise energy efficiency, thanks to the integration of the 3nm extreme ultraviolet lithography technology.
Previously, hardware-accelerated ray tracing was exclusive to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. With the A17 Pro’s new shader architecture, Apple introduces this feature, promising a 4x faster ray tracing performance compared to the A16.
This paves the way for improved gaming and AR experiences.
Apple indicates that the A17 Pro will support console-level titles, allowing them to run natively on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.
This means games like 2021’s Resident Evil Village or 2023’s Resident Evil 4 Remake, which are available on modern consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, can be experienced on Apple’s new devices.
The A17 Pro is equipped with a 6-core GPU, introducing features like mesh shading. The chipset also incorporates an AV1 decoder for better video streaming.
On the data transfer front, Apple has added a new USB controller to the mix, bringing USB 3 speeds to the iPhone, starting with the iPhone 15 Pro and its higher variants.
This ensures faster data transfers and supports video output up to 4K at 60 fps HDR.
With the A17 Pro chipset, Apple offers notable advancements in mobile graphics and performance.
From gaming to video streaming and data transfer, the chipset seems set to elevate the overall user experience on Apple’s latest devices.
