Apple has announced its plans to expand the language support for its Apple Intelligence feature.
In the beginning, the Apple Intelligence features will be available exclusively in US English. However, in a recent TechCrunch report, Apple reiterated that more languages and localisations will be added to its AI over the next year.
“Apple Intelligence will not currently work if you are in the EU and if your Apple ID Country/Region is also in the EU,” Apple notes in a support article. “If traveling outside of the EU, Apple Intelligence will work when your device language and Siri language are set to a supported language.”
“Apple Intelligence will not currently work for iPhone models purchased in China mainland. For supported iPhone models purchased outside of China mainland, Apple Intelligence will not currently work if you are in China mainland and if your Apple ID Country/Region is also in China mainland,” the company had said previously.
At launch, Apple Intelligence will not be available in China or the European Union due to legal and regulatory restrictions.
However, users outside of those regions can set their devices to US English to try out the beta version of the feature.
Apple Intelligence is set to launch with iOS 18.1 in October 2024.
The recent report suggests that Apple plans to roll out additional language support in December 2024. This will be started with localised versions of English first
These include UK English, as well as English localisations for Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa.
Moreover, English localisations for other countries such as India and Singapore have also been planned.
This update is expected to come with the release of iOS 18.2. This same update is also rumoured to introduce new key Apple Intelligence features such as Genmoji, Image Playgrounds, and integration with ChatGPT.
When Apple begins supporting non-English languages for Apple Intelligence in 2025, the following languages are expected to be included –
- Chinese
- French
- Japanese
- Spanish
- German
- Italian
- Korean
- Portuguese
- Vietnamese
There is also a possibility of more languages being added in later iOS updates.
As for the previously mentioned legal challenges in the EU and China, the Cupertino giant claimed that is actively working with regulators and issues will be addressed soon.
In the EU, the Digital Markets Act currently prevents Apple from launching Apple Intelligence on iPhone and iPad.
However, it is interesting that these features are already enabled in the macOS Sequoia 15.1 developer beta. This is possible because macOS is not classified as a gatekeeper platform.
It appears Apple is hopeful with that ongoing discussions with the European Commission. The company believes Apple Intelligence will be allowed in the region eventually.
