Apple is reportedly kicking off trial production for the iPhone 17 series in India, signaling another big step in the company’s shift away from relying solely on China for manufacturing. This early production run is happening in South India and marks a significant expansion of India’s role in Apple’s global supply chain, even before the official launch.
According to Economic Times, Apple has already started testing and building early iPhone 17 units in India through Foxconn, its largest manufacturing partner. The company is also importing components from China for this process. Interestingly, 90% of these parts are meant for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 16 models, while only 10% are for the new iPhone 17, confirming that production is still in its trial phase.
The report says, “Foxconn has started importing components from China to India for assembling the upcoming iPhone 17, showed customs data seen by ET. The components imported so far could be meant for trial production, according to industry experts […] Various components and sub-assemblies such as the display assembly, cover glass, mechanical housing and integrated rear camera modules began arriving in India last month, as per the customs data.”
Sources say Foxconn has begun the process this month, hinting that mass production could begin as early as August. This also aligns with Apple’s push to boost device availability ahead of the Indian festive season. Expect to see special deals and promotions to drive sales in August.
There’s also talk of a new Foxconn plant coming up in Oragadam, Tamil Nadu, while the current Bengaluru facility will focus on producing the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e models. Meanwhile, a spring 2026 debut is expected for the iPhone 17e, and hands-on images of the iPhone 17 Pro have already started surfacing online.
Meanwhile, several reports suggest that the Chinese government is not pleased with the development. And one way it is trying to disrupt the process is by making it different for Chinese engineers to stay in India.
Bloomberg recently reported on recall of Chinese engineers from India and said, “The bulk of Foxconn’s Chinese staff at iPhone plants in southern India have been told to fly back in a move that began about two months ago, people familiar with the matter said, asking not to be named as the information is private. More than 300 Chinese workers have left, and mostly support staff from Taiwan remain in India, one of the people said.”
