Google has shared new insights revealing how Android’s AI-powered security is helping users stay safer from mobile scams, one of today’s fastest-growing digital threats. According to the company, AI-assisted fraud caused global financial losses exceeding $400 billion in the past year alone.

Google says Android’s multi-layered protection system backed by Google AI blocks scams before they reach users. Every month, Android intercepts over 10 billion potential scam calls and messages, while RCS safety checks continue to flag suspicious activity with more than 100 million phone numbers blocked just in the past month.

Android Users Report Fewer Scam Texts Than iPhone Owners

A survey by Google and YouGov, covering 5,000 smartphone users across the U.S., India, and Brazil, found that Android users are significantly less likely to receive scam messages compared to iPhone owners.

Key findings from the report include –

  • Android users were 58% more likely than iPhone users to say they hadn’t received any scam texts in the past week.
  • Pixel users were 96% more likely than iPhone users to report zero scam texts.
  • iPhone users were 65% more likely than Android users to receive three or more scam messages weekly.
  • Android users were 20% more likely to describe their scam protection as “very effective” or “extremely effective.”
  • iPhone users were 150% more likely to report that their phones failed to block scams or fraud attempts.

Independent Studies Back Android’s AI Security Strength

Supporting Google’s findings, a Counterpoint Research evaluation found that Android devices offer the widest AI-powered protection, spanning ten key areas such as email filtering, browsing safety, and behavioural threat detection. iOS, by comparison, uses AI in only two protection categories.

Another Leviathan Security Group assessment tested scam protection across flagship devices, the iPhone 17, Pixel 10 Pro, Moto Razr+ 2025, and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. The results showed that Android smartphones, led by the Pixel 10 Pro, provided the strongest built-in defence against scams and fraud.

Highlights of Android’s protection include –

  • On-device AI call screening and real-time scam alerts
  • Automatic authentication warnings during suspicious calls
  • Blocking risky actions like installing unverified apps or disabling key security settings

How Android Defends Users Against Scams?

Message Protection

  • Google Messages automatically filters spam into a dedicated folder.
  • Scam Detection AI scans texts from unknown senders for scam-like behaviour and issues instant alerts.
  • Malicious links in messages are automatically flagged or blocked.

Call Protection

  • Phone by Google blocks known spam calls before they ring.
  • Call Screen answers unknown calls and identifies potential fraud.
  • On-device AI analyses ongoing calls locally, issuing scam warnings without recording or sharing any data.
  • Android also prevents social engineering by blocking risky actions and warning users if their screen is being shared unknowingly.

Apart from the above measures, Google Play Protect scans apps continuously for harmful behaviour. Chrome’s Safe Browsing, now powered by large language models (LLMs), alerts users about dangerous websites and downloads.

These layers create a real-time, proactive defence system across calls, messages, apps, and browsing.
