Highlights

  • Bharti Airtel added 12.5 lakh new subscribers in March 2026.
  • Jio added only 10.5 lakh subscribers but continued to be the leader in the 5G FWA segment.
  • Vodafone Idea saw a small increase in subscribers.

The latest data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) shows that Airtel was the top telecom operator in terms of subscriber additions in March, while Jio ranked second.

This is the third consecutive month when Airtel has outperformed Jio. Despite lagging behind in subscriber additions, Jio remains the market leader overall, while Airtel’s continuous growth reflects consumer preferences and a shift in the competition.

Airtel Leads Subscriber Additions in March

Bharti Airtel added around 12.5 lakh wireless subscribers in March 2026. Such a huge gain in subscriber addition has placed him at the top of the telcos. This is the third month in a row when Airtel has added more subscribers than Jio, reflecting strong growth.

The major factors behind Airtel’s growth are its focus on premium users, improved network quality, and strong 4G and 5G services, which attract high-value customers.

Jio Follows Closely but Focuses on 5G Growth

Reliance Jio added about 10.5 lakh subscribers in March. Although it added fewer subscribers than Airtel, Jio still leads the 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) market thanks to its rapid expansion.

Jio now seems to be focusing more on data-heavy users and home broadband rather than just increasing mobile subscribers.

Vodafone Idea and BSNL: Mixed Performance

Vodafone Idea showed signs of stabilising, adding subscribers for the second month in a row. In March, it added 1.03 lakh subscribers, up from just 21,297 in February.

BSNL added about 2 lakh subscribers, a rare gain that may signal early results from its network upgrades and expansion.

Three-Month Trend: Airtel’s Growing Momentum

Over the last three months, Airtel has consistently added more subscribers than Jio, demonstrating steady growth rather than a one-time increase. This trend highlights Airtel’s success with urban and premium users and better customer retention.

What This Means for the Telecom Market

The latest data shows that the telecom market is more competitive, and leadership is no longer just about total subscribers. Jio still leads overall, but Airtel is catching up in new additions and user quality, which could affect long-term revenue.

Emergence of Airtel as the top telecom in terms of subscriber additions over the past three months shows a significant shift for India’s telecom sector. As competition grows, companies are focusing more on quality subscribers, 5G services, and bundled plans, which will shape the next phase of industry growth.
