Acer India hacked again; over 50GB user data allegedly stolen

If you use Acer India’s laptop or desktop, then there’s a bad news for you. Acer has recently suffered a data breach in India after a cyber-attack on its local after-sales service system. Hackers have broken into the servers of Acer India and for the second time this year, they have claimed to have stolen the company’s data.

An Acer Corporate Communications has said that the company has recently detected an ‘isolated attack’ on its local after-sales service system in the country, as per a report by Bleeping Computer.

“As part of our security threat evaluations and system checks, we have recently detected an isolated attack in early October 2021 on our local after-sales service system in India. While there was no financial information of Indian customers compromised, we are actively reaching out to potentially affected customers,” Acer said in a statement.

“This incident has no material impact to our operations and business continuity. Acer is also devoting additional resources to further strengthen the security infrastructure in India with the help of cyber security experts and authorities,” the Taiwanese company said.

Acer data breach

As per Data Breaches, a hacker group that calls itself Desorden has taken the responsibility for this hacking and has claimed that they stole around 60GB of data from Taiwanese electronics major’s Indian servers by breaking into them. The hackers claim that the data they stole includes customer as well as corporate business data. On the popular hacker forum, the group has also posted a video showcasing the stolen files and databases. A company spokesperson says that Acer’s after sales service system has been hacked. In this data leak, the login details of distributors and retailers of Acer India have also been reported to be stolen. This includes the data of 10,000 customers, out of which the data of 3,000 distributors and retailers is being told.

Second cyber-security incident faced by Acer this year

This is not the first time that Acer has been a victim to such a massive data breach. Earlier in March this year, there was a cyber-attack on the company. During that time Acer was attacked through REvil ransomware. The hackers demanded $50 million in ransom to recover the stolen data. However, Acer has not yet confirmed whether the ransom money was paid to the hacker.

According to a Google report, India is slowly becoming a hotbed of ransomware attacks. Google has shared the data of the last one and a half years. It was told that the company has analyzed more than 8 crore ransomware attack samples. Based on this, India ranks 6th in the list of 140 countries in terms of ransomware attacks.
