India to Get Its Own Smartphone Brand by 2028: Ashwini Vaishnaw Says “Note the Date”

Highlights

  • Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw set the deadline of October 23, 2028, for the first fully Indian-designed, manufactured, and branded smartphone.
  • He revealed an Indian company has already designed and delivered a 5G smartphone to a major US telecom provider.
  • The initiative builds on a design challenge issued by the government to Indian companies roughly three years ago.

India has one of the world’s largest smartphone users and is also one of the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturing hubs. But foreign companies design most devices produced in the country and sell them under international labels. This landscape is set to undergo a major shift, as Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a bold vision for India’s technology sector at the NDTV World Summit.

India will have its own smartphone brand by 2028, says minister

Speaking at the NDTV World Summit in Delhi, the minister sets an October 23, 2028, deadline for the launch of India’s domestic smartphone brand. He emphasised the government’s commitment to building end-to-end technology capabilities and urged the audience to note the date.

Vaishnaw said, “This is 23 October 2026. Please note it: 23 October 2028. You will have Indian-designed, Indian-manufactured, Indian-branded mobile phones.”

What Will Make These Smartphones Truly Indian?

The minister highlighted that hardware design challenges were given to domestic firms around 3.5 years prior. Two Indian companies developed printed circuit board (PCB) designs, and one successfully designed, manufactured, and supplied a 5G smartphone to a major US telecom operator, proving local design capabilities.

For a device to be truly Indian, local engineers should develop the system architecture, hardware integration, and software optimisation from the ground up, rather than relying on reference designs provided by foreign chipmaker platforms.

Indian Design and Intellectual Property

The initiative ensures that the IP continues to remain in India. Domestic companies that own the underlying design IP have complete control over future product roadmaps, features, and security architectures. Local IP retention allows Indian firms to build long-term value, license technology and not be dependent on foreign Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs).

Why There is Need for Homegrown Hardware Development

Building domestic hardware and keeping intellectual property (IP) at home has various strategic, technical and economic benefits:

  • More control and product innovation
  • Protecting intellectual property (IP)
  • Moving up the value chain
  • Enhancing specialised engineering capabilities
  • Improved integration of supply chain and components

Manufacturing Phones in India vs Building an Indian Brand

The high-value operations stay in the country by owning the brand and the design.

Factor Local Assembly / Manufacturing Homegrown Indian Brand
Design Ownership Foreign entities own the schematic and layout. Indian companies own full hardware and IP design.
Intellectual Property Brand awareness Inside India’s borders
Brand Recognition Encourages foreign identities. Establishes local brands in domestic and export markets.
Value Addition Primarily labour and local component assembly. High-value design, engineering, and brand equity.

What are the Challenges for Domestic Production?

The move from product assembly to genuine homegrown manufacturing for India’s domestic smartphone manufacturing industry comes with several core structural and operational challenges:

  • High dependence on imported core components like semiconductors, display imports and low local value addition
  • Lack of innovation and design
  • IP ownership
  • Fragmented Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers
  • Intense competition in the market and perception of the consumers

India’s 5G Phone to a Major US Telecom Operator

The Electronics and Information Technology Minister Vaishnaw revealed that an Indian firm had already successfully designed, manufactured, and shipped a 5G smartphone to a major US telecom operator.

How the Government Plans to Support Indian Smartphone Brands

The minister said the government plans to use a variety of policy instruments to encourage local design and manufacture. This includes product-linked incentive (PLI) schemes, design-led manufacturing initiatives and sovereign IP protection.

Will India’s Smartphone Brands Compete With Apple and Samsung?

Apple and Samsung, among others, have the advantages of scale, custom silicon, tight software integration and retail relationships. Indian brands will likely start with high-volume value and mid-range segments, instead of jumping straight into ultra-premium flagship devices. Local brands with competitive 5G specifications, local software customisation and affordable price points can establish a strong local foothold before expanding into emerging export markets.

When Will India’s First Homegrown Smartphone Launch?

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that India’s homegrown smartphone brand will officially enter the market on October 23, 2028. As product design cycles progress, detailed specifications, brand names, and manufacturing partners are yet to be announced.
