Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, 8 Elite Gen 6 Launched: 2nm Chip, 5GHz CPU and New AI Features

Qualcomm has officially introduced its new flagship smartphone chipsets, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. The two platforms form Qualcomm’s new premium mobile lineup and bring a major focus on agentic AI, gaming, imaging and connectivity.

Both chipsets are based on a 2nm process and use Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU architecture, with peak CPU speeds reaching 5GHz. Qualcomm says the two-chip strategy is designed to give smartphone makers more choice while bringing its latest AI and performance technologies to a broader range of premium devices.

The two platforms share the same fundamental architecture, but the Extreme version adds 18MB of dedicated Adreno High Performance Memory, Neural Fusion and more advanced video and AI capabilities.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Series Launched: What’s New

Qualcomm has introduced two new flagship platforms instead of a single successor to its previous-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite lineup. Notably, Motorola Signature 27 is the first device which has been officially launched during the same Qualcomm conference featuring Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor. Furthermore, these chips will be seen inside this year’s biggest flagship devices including OnePlus 16 and iQOO 16.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 sits at the top of the range, with additional graphics, AI and imaging capabilities. The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 retains the same 2nm foundation and core Oryon architecture while offering a slightly different feature set for premium smartphones.

Qualcomm says the multi-flagship approach gives OEMs more flexibility and allows the company’s latest technologies to reach a broader range of premium devices.

The first smartphones powered by the new chipsets are expected from HONOR, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, REDMI, RedMagic, vivo and Xiaomi. Qualcomm has not officially assigned a specific chipset to every brand or upcoming phone.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6: Specifications and Features

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is Qualcomm’s most powerful mobile platform in this generation. It is manufactured using a 2nm process and features a custom Qualcomm Oryon CPU.

The CPU includes two Prime cores clocked at up to 5GHz and six Performance cores reaching up to 4GHz, according to the specifications reported by Notebookcheck. It also features 16MB of Oryon Flex Cache.

Qualcomm claims a 13% increase in CPU performance compared with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, alongside a 37% better CPU power efficiency. The Adreno GPU delivers up to 44% higher graphics performance and 40% better power efficiency compared with the previous generation.

The chipset also supports LPDDR5X/LPDDR6-5300 memory up to 24GB and UFS 5.0 storage.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6: What It Offers

The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 uses the same 2nm manufacturing process and custom Oryon CPU architecture. It also reaches a 5GHz peak CPU speed.

Qualcomm claims the Oryon CPU delivers a 10% performance improvement and 37% better power efficiency over the previous generation. The Adreno GPU is claimed to offer 35% higher performance and 40% improved efficiency, while the Hexagon NPU delivers a 14% performance improvement.

The platform retains many of Qualcomm’s latest AI, gaming, camera and connectivity technologies, including Elite Color Engine, Intelligent Pixel Control, Motion Intelligence, Game Quick Touch 3.0 and hardware-accelerated ray tracing.

AI Gets a Major Upgrade

Agentic AI is one of the biggest areas of focus for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series. Qualcomm says the platforms can run personalised on-device AI agents that understand context and adapt to how users interact with their devices.

The Hexagon NPU has been redesigned with a new Element Accelerator, Micro Tile Inferencing and increased shared memory. On the Extreme variant, Qualcomm says the NPU can handle 30-billion-plus parameter Mixture of Experts models directly on the device, with context windows of up to 32K.

The Qualcomm Sensing Hub also gets dual Micro NPUs. Qualcomm claims up to 85% higher performance and 20% better efficiency for the Sensing Hub. It is designed to process contextual information from sources such as messages, emails and conversations while keeping processing on the device.

Qualcomm’s Element Accelerator is designed to improve AI processing across different model types and workloads, while on-device learning can help personalise AI experiences over time.

Gaming and GPU Improvements

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 introduces Adreno Neural Fusion, which combines dedicated AI processing with the Adreno GPU.

The technology can be used for AI-powered super resolution, frame generation and advanced image reconstruction in games. Qualcomm says the Extreme variant also includes 18MB of dedicated Adreno High Performance Memory, giving it additional graphics memory for demanding workloads.

The platform supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing, including technologies such as Lumen Global Illumination and Nanite Virtualized Geometry. Qualcomm has also worked with game engines including Unreal Engine, Unity and NetEase’s Messiah engine.

Qualcomm says the Extreme GPU delivers 44% higher graphics performance and 40% better power efficiency than the previous-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

Camera and Video Upgrades

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 gets several camera and video capabilities aimed at high-end smartphone imaging.

The chipset supports 8K video recording at 60fps and 4K slow-motion video at 240fps. It also supports the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec for professional video workflows.

Qualcomm has also introduced Intelligent Pixel Control, which uses AI to analyse individual pixels and improve image quality. The Elite Color Engine adds real-time 3D LUT support for colour processing.

Another major addition is support for triple 64MP cameras, which Qualcomm describes as a first for mobile platforms. The Extreme variant also features a new triple 20-bit Spectra AI-ISP for advanced image processing.

The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 also gets Intelligent Pixel Control and Elite Color Engine, although the advanced 8K60, 4K240 and native APV capabilities are reserved for the Extreme variant.

Connectivity

Both Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 platforms use Qualcomm’s X105 5G Modem-RF System.

The modem supports theoretical download speeds of up to 14.8Gbps and upload speeds of up to 4.2Gbps. The platforms also support six-antenna configurations, 5G Advanced and satellite connectivity through NTN technologies.

For local wireless connectivity, both platforms use Qualcomm FastConnect 8800, with peak speeds of up to 11.6Gbps. The system supports Wi-Fi 8, Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 6, along with Bluetooth 6.0, UWB and Thread.

The platforms also support satellite communication, including NB-NTN for messaging and NR-NTN for higher-bandwidth voice, data and video applications.

Phones Expected With Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Series

Qualcomm has confirmed that the new platforms will appear in flagship smartphones from several major brands.
