It’s almost a tradition in the tech world: Analysts make bold predictions on how many new Apple iPhone units will hit the market.
As the launch date nears, these figures get revised, usually downward, citing last-minute production issues or supply constraints.
As per 9to5Mac, Jeff Pu, a notable analyst, recently adjusted his initial estimate for the iPhone 15 from 83 million units to 77 million.
Notably, this isn’t a standalone opinion. A report from Japanese bank Mizuho also chips in, revising its yearly production estimate from 84 million to 73 million units for the iPhone 15.
In a more recent update, it appears that not all models of the iPhone 15 will be ready to meet customer hands on the same day.
A significant delay is expected for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, according to another analyst’s note. This specific model is set to feature a periscope lens for advanced optical zoom, a first for the iPhone series.
However, Sony has reportedly run into issues with timely sensor delivery, causing a ripple effect in the production timeline. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is now expected to reach customers in October, while other models are slated for September 22.
Mizuho also presented an interesting number that goes beyond just the iPhone 15. The firm initially projected that Apple would produce 227 million iPhones across all models for 2023.
However, this number has been scaled back to 217 million. This ten million unit cut gives us a broader look into how supply issues are affecting not just the upcoming iPhone 15 but also Apple’s overall strategy for the year.
As if supply constraints and feature delays weren’t enough to keep up with it seems that Apple is also looking to change a few of its iconic colour options.
The tech giant has decided to eliminate the gold colour variant for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models.
Instead, these premium models will feature a new “Titan Gray” shade, incorporated into a titanium frame. Furthermore, the special edition Deep Purple is being phased out, to be replaced by a dark blue variant.

Analysts have cited supply chain issues and “demand concerns” as primary factors affecting production estimates.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected to be delayed until October due to supply issues related to its new periscope lens.
The gold colour will be replaced by “Titan Gray,” and a new dark blue option will replace the special edition Deep Purple.
Mizuho Bank has revised its estimate from 227 million to 217 million iPhones for 2023.
