The accident claimed the lives of three young female university students who were on their way to Chizhou for a civil service exam. The incident marks the first reported fatal crash involving Xiaomi’s electric vehicle, and it’s raised serious concerns about autonomous driving technology and EV safety. The car involved was delivered in October 2024 and relied on Xiaomi’s vision-based Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) system. "There is no precise conclusion currently as to whether the car door was able to be opened at the time of the accident," Xiaomi said Xiaomi’s Response Xiaomi formed a special investigation team on March 30, visited the crash site, and submitted vehicle data to the police by March 31. CEO Lei Jun expressed regret and promised full transparency. Lei Jun reportedly said the company would support the victims’ families. In a late-night statement on his Weibo account, Lei Jun said that "at this point, I feel that I should not wait any longer, I must stand up and promise on behalf of Xiaomi: no matter what happens, Xiaomi will not evade." Xiaomi also noted that the AEB (automatic emergency braking) system didn’t activate because the obstacle, reportedly a water barrier that wasn’t currently recognised by the system.
