Highlights Galaxy Watch 7 and Ultra no longer support reverse wireless charging New BioActive sensor design is the reason for this change Older chargers may cause slower charging and more heat Samsung recommends using the latest chargers for optimal performance Samsung's latest smartwatches, the Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra, were unveiled yesterday alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6. While the new watches boast significant improvements, they've also lost a convenient feature: the ability to charge wirelessly with compatible Samsung phones. Samsung says: However, the new sensor design required a change in the shape of the back glass. This change increased the distance between your watch’s internal wireless charging coil and the wireless charger, so the wireless power share feature available on the previous model was no longer supported. What You Should Know Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra Drop Reverse Wireless Charging Galaxy Watch 7 and Ultra no longer support reverse wireless charging from phones Change due to new BioActive sensor design Older chargers may cause slower charging and generate more heat Many consumers are surprised by the elimination of reverse wireless charging capability, known as "Wireless PowerShare" on Samsung smartphones. This functionality allows owners to charge their timepieces with their phone's battery in an emergency. According to a Samsung support website obtained by Twitter user JordyV27, the new watches do not enable phone-based reverse wireless charging owing to a revised health and activity tracking sensor. As per the manufacturer, the distance between the watch's internal charging coil and the wireless charger has increased. BioActive Sensor Hindering Wireless Charging New BioActive sensor design is the reason for this change This adjustment appears to be associated with the recently announced BioActive sensor. While giving up the ease of phone charging, Samsung hopes to give more exact health and fitness stats, which are a major feature of smartwatches. The new sensor design also affects charging with older accessories. Samsung advises that using previous-generation chargers with the Galaxy Watch 7 and Ultra would result in slower charging times and perhaps higher temperatures. Samsung recommends using the latest chargers for optimal performance This extra heat might accelerate battery breakdown over time. To guarantee best charging performance and battery health, Samsung advises only utilizing the chargers that come with the newest smartwatch models. While some users may miss the ability to top up their watch using their phone, the decision to prioritise improved health tracking aligns with the primary purpose of these devices. It's possible that future iterations of the Galaxy Watch may reintroduce this feature as sensor technology continues to evolve and miniaturise. FAQs What feature has been removed from the Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra? The Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra no longer support reverse wireless charging from compatible Samsung phones. Why did Samsung remove reverse wireless charging from these smartwatches? The removal is due to a new BioActive sensor design that increases the distance between the watch's charging coil and the wireless charger. Can I still use older chargers with the Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra? Yes, but Samsung advises that using older chargers may result in slower charging times and increased heat, which can affect battery health over time. What is the BioActive sensor, and how does it affect the watches? The BioActive sensor is a new design aimed at providing more accurate health and fitness tracking. It has impacted the ability to charge the watches using phone-based reverse wireless charging. Will future Galaxy Watch models reintroduce reverse wireless charging?
