Highlights Pixel 9 series introduces new sizes and designs Pixel 9 Pro Fold among thinnest foldables Battery and charging speeds significantly improved Pixel 9 series may launch with Android 14 The upcoming Google Pixel 9 series has been the subject of numerous leaks and rumours. As we approach the expected launch date, we've gathered a wealth of information about these new devices. Let's dive into what we've learned about the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. A New Size in the Lineup The Pixel 9 Pro XL will continue the larger "Pro" sizing we've seen in previous years. This year, Google is introducing a split in its lineup. The Pixel 9 Pro XL will continue the larger "Pro" sizing we've seen in previous years. However, the Pixel 9 Pro will offer a smaller device without compromising on camera hardware and internal components. This gives users more choice in finding the right size for their needs. Design Evolution The design of Pixel phones has evolved significantly since the Pixel 3 era Recent leaks have given us a good look at the Pixel 9 Pro XL. Comparison videos show how it stacks up against previous Pixel models. Interestingly, the Pixel 9 Pro XL appears to be slightly smaller than the Pixel 6 Pro and 7 Pro. This could be due to smaller bezels and better use of space inside the device. The design of Pixel phones has evolved significantly since the Pixel 3 era. The playful touches of earlier models have gradually given way to a more iPhone-like aesthetic with a boxy design. One notable feature is the updated floating camera bar, which protrudes further than any previous Pixel camera system, except perhaps the base Pixel 6. Slimming Down the Foldable According to leaks, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold will measure just 10.5mm thick when folded. Google is set to launch its second-generation foldable, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Impressively, it's shaping up to be one of the thinnest foldables in the world. According to leaks, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold will measure just 10.5mm thick when folded. This is a significant improvement over the first Pixel Fold, which was 12.1mm thick. While this won't set a global record (Honor's Magic V3 is an astonishing 9.2mm when closed), it puts Google right up there with some of the thinnest foldables on the market. It's considerably thinner than Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 6, which measures 12.1mm thick. Battery and Charging Improvements The Pixel 9 Pro XL offers "up to 70% in about 30 minutes" Leaks have revealed some exciting updates to battery capacity and charging speeds for the Pixel 9 series: The Pixel 9 and 9 Pro will reportedly charge "up to 55% in about 30 minutes" The Pixel 9 Pro XL offers "up to 70% in about 30 minutes" The Pixel 9 and 9 Pro will reportedly charge "up to 55% in about 30 minutes" These improvements require the use of Google's upcoming 45W USB-C charger, which has a new design. Pixel 9 Pro XL: 5,060 mAh (a slight increase over the Pixel 8 Pro) Pixel 9 Pro Fold: 4,650 mAh (slightly lower than the original Pixel Fold) Google is touting 24 hours of battery life for all models, with Extreme Battery Saver extending that to 100 hours on the non-foldable models and 72 hours on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. An Unexpected Software Situation Pixel 9 series may launch with Android 14 instead of Android 15 Traditionally, new Pixel phones have launched with the latest version of Android. However, a recent leak suggests this might not be the case in 2024. According to reports, the Pixel 9 series may launch with Android 14 instead of Android 15. This could be due to the phones launching earlier than usual, possibly before Android 15 is fully ready. It's likely that an Android 15 update would be available immediately during the setup process. While this might seem disappointing, it shouldn't affect Google's promise of 7 years of updates for these devices. The guarantee is based on years of updates rather than a specific number of Android versions. Camera Improvements Pixel 9 Pro will offer a smaller device without compromising on camera hardware and internal components While we don't have detailed camera specs yet, the larger camera bump on the Pixel 9 Pro XL suggests some significant improvements. Google has consistently delivered excellent camera performance, so expectations are high for the new models. The Made by Google event, where the Pixel 9 series is expected to be unveiled, is reportedly scheduled for 13 August. This is earlier than Google's usual October launch window for flagship Pixels.
