Instagram Black and White Issue Archives ~ My Mobile India

Highlights A recent Instagram bug caused HDR photos to appear in black and white for some users. This happened because of a glitch in Instagram’s image processing system. Instagram has released a fix, and affected photos are now being restored automatically. A recent glitch on Instagram left thousands of users confused when their colourful photos suddenly turned black and white. The problem started around April 18 and 19, causing many people to worry about their devices or camera settings. Meta has since explained that a temporary technical bug was to blame, not any user error. What Happened: The Black-and-White Glitch The bug mainly affected photo posts on the social media application, especially HDR (High Dynamic Range) photos. Those photos appeared in black and white instead of their original colours. Users from different regions said their uploads looked normal before posting, but turned grayscale after publication. Instagram later confirmed that only some users were affected and that the issue was caused by a technical fault in how HDR images were processed and displayed on the platform. Why This Happened: Technical Bug in HDR Processing The main reason for the problem was how Instagram handles HDR images. These photos have more brightness and colour data, so they need special support to display correctly. The company said a bug interrupted this process, making some images lose their colour and appear in grayscale. Because HDR processing is more complicated than standard image rendering, even a small glitch in the app’s backend can cause visible problems like this. This situation shows how much modern apps rely on advanced image processing, and how small mistakes can affect the user experience. How It Has Been Fixed Instagram has already released a fix for the problem. The company said that affected photos will automatically revert to their original colour, so users do not need to take any action. Instagram has already released a fix for the problem Users who had this glitch should see their posts restored within a few hours after the fix is applied to all servers. Instagram has also apologised for the inconvenience. How Users Can Fix It on Their End Although the issue is mostly fixed, users who still have the problem can try a few simple steps to help speed up the process: Update the Instagram app to the latest version Restart the app or device Wait for automatic restoration, as changes are being applied server-side These steps help make sure the latest bug fixes work correctly on your device. What Users Experienced This situation was alarming for many users, as it changed their content without warning. Many creators and influencers were worried about how it would affect the appearance of their posts. The sudden switch to black-and-white images disrupted their style, branding, and engagement. However, the issue did not affect original uploads or stored media, so no data was lost. Only the display was temporarily changed. The Instagram black-and-white bug is a reminder that even big platforms can have unexpected technical problems. Now that the issue is fixed, it shows how important timely updates and backend fixes are for a smooth user experience. FAQs Q 1. Why did Instagram photos turn black and white?
