End-to-end encryption maintained across different messaging apps. WhatsApp increases minimum system requirements to Android 5.0. WhatsApp is preparing to broaden its horizons by integrating with other messaging platforms. This initiative has been in the pipeline for a while, and recent findings from the app’s latest beta version provide more insight into the feature’s functionality and development stage. “The Digital Markets Act (DMA) targets large tech companies who heavily influence the digital market, requiring them to facilitate user communication across multiple apps. Since it is required by law, WhatsApp must offer support for third-party chats to their European Region users. Thanks to the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.5.18 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on the chat interoperability feature!” DMA Paving Way for Third-Party WhatsApp DMA Paving Way for Third-Party WhatsApp This move by WhatsApp is a direct response to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which seeks to dismantle barriers among tech behemoths and foster competition in the digital realm. The forthcoming “chat interoperability” feature in WhatsApp will enable users in the European Union to interact with contacts across various messaging apps, even if those contacts are not WhatsApp users. The feature, currently under development and not yet available to users, was discovered by Wabetainfo in WhatsApp Android beta version 2.24.5.18. New Features in Beta Testing New Features in Beta Testing According to the revealed screenshot, a new section will be added to the app where users can opt to activate interoperability, thereby enabling them to effortlessly send messages beyond the confines of WhatsApp. While the integrity of end-to-end encryption will be preserved, different messaging apps might employ diverse encryption protocols, resulting in a distinct inbox for these external conversations. Consequently, WhatsApp is urging users to be vigilant when utilizing chat interoperability. In addition to concerns about encryption compatibility, cross-platform communication could potentially heighten the risk of spam and scams. Each app has its unique privacy policies, which might handle your data differently than WhatsApp. Despite these challenges, this step by WhatsApp is a significant victory for consumers in the EU, offering them more options and flexibility in their online communication. WhatsApp To Stop Working on Phones Below Android 5.0 WhatsApp To Stop Working on Phones Below Android 5.0 In more WhatsApp news, the company has declared an increase in the minimum system requirements for using the app on Android devices. Until now, WhatsApp was accessible to users with devices operating on Android Jelly Bean 4.1 and subsequent versions. However, this is set to change. As of March 1, 2024, WhatsApp will only be compatible with devices operating on Android 5.0 Lollipop or newer versions. For those owning a Xiaomi device operating on an Android version older than 5.0, the use of WhatsApp will cease after March 1, 2024. There are no alternative solutions or workarounds to continue using WhatsApp on these devices. The decision, although delayed in its implementation, seems irreversible. Users with incompatible Xiaomi phones are left with two choices: either upgrade to a newer model operating on Android 5.0 or later, or transition to a different messaging application.
