Highlights Apple stealthily introduces woven USB-C cables with iPhone 15, aiming at enhanced durability. The woven cables, known for resistance to wear, are priced at $29 for the 2m standalone variant. iPhone 15 bundle includes a 1-meter woven cable, while a 60W 1-meter replacement is available for $19. For many Apple aficionados, the bane of their experience has often been a frail iPhone charging cable. While the iPhone has always been lauded for its design and functionality, its accompanying cable has often fallen short of expectations. Enter the iPhone 15, and Apple may just have turned the tide with its woven USB-C cables. Amidst the major showcases, Apple quietly introduced a promising upgrade: woven USB-C cables. For those unfamiliar, woven or braided cables are entwined with fabric, offering a sturdier and more resilient alternative to their non-braided counterparts. Historically, these reinforced cables are known for their longevity and resistance to wear and tear. Surprisingly, Apple's braided cable introduction was not given centre stage. Instead, the discovery came when a 240W woven USB-C cable appeared on Apple's official online store, priced at $29. A keen eye would note that these cables closely mirror those seen alongside the iPhone 15 and its Pro variant during the event. iPhone 15's Unsung Hero But there's more to the story. Apple's standalone woven cable boasts a generous length of 2 meters (~6.5 feet). In contrast, the iPhone 15 bundle will seemingly include a shorter, 1-meter (~3.2 feet) counterpart. Those seeking replacements have the option to purchase a 60W, 1-meter variant for $19. Given that the iPhone 15 supports 20W charging, it raises questions about potential differences in the bundled and standalone cable charging speeds. Future use will undoubtedly shed light on this. One aspect that raised eyebrows is the absence of strain relief on these new cables. This feature, a rubber segment near the cable's connectors, plays a crucial role in preventing wear and damage. Despite the enhanced durability of woven cables, the addition of strain relief would have been the cherry on top. So What Does This Mean? Apple's shift to woven USB-C cables signifies an acknowledgment of a long-standing consumer concern. While these braided cables are anticipated to be sturdier, Apple's official stance on their enhanced durability remains unvoiced. FAQs What's unique about the woven USB-C cables with iPhone 15? The woven, or braided, cables are reinforced with fabric, making them sturdier and more resistant to wear and tear compared to the traditional cables. How did Apple announce the new woven cables? Interestingly, Apple discreetly introduced these cables. The announcement wasn't at the forefront; instead, it became apparent when a 240W woven USB-C cable appeared on Apple's online store. Are there different lengths available for the new woven cables? Yes, the standalone cable available for purchase is 2 meters long, while the one bundled with the iPhone 15 is approximately 1 meter. A 60W 1-meter replacement cable is also on offer. Does the new woven cable feature strain relief? No, the new cables lack strain relief, a rubberized segment that typically helps prevent cable wear near connectors.
