HIGHLIGHTS Leaked images of iPhone 15 Pro show a USB Type-C port. Apple's shift to USB Type-C might be influenced by EU regulations. The new port supports speeds up to 40 Gbps, potentially 80 times faster than the lightning port. Official confirmation is expected at the September 13 unveiling event. Apple's iPhone launch events have always been the focal point of tech enthusiasts around the globe. This September, the excitement is mounting for the anticipated unveiling of the iPhone 15 Series. Scheduled for September 13, leaks, and rumors are already swirling, with one particular detail catching attention – the possible inclusion of a USB Type-C port. There have been rumours and case renders to back up these claims. Now a new leak has emerged further solidifying the notion that Apple is moving away from its proprietary Lightning port. Leaked Images and Speculation Images, allegedly showcasing the iPhone 15 Pro's prototype, have emerged online, thanks to the well-known tipster Ice Universe. These images display a USB Type-C port, diverging from Apple's signature lightning port. Apple iPhone 15 Leaked Images However, caution is advised in interpreting these leaks. Prototypes like these might be created by case manufacturers preparing for the phone's launch, and given Apple's reputation for keeping secrets, the authenticity of these images will always remain unconfirmed till the time the official launch announcement happens. Why USB Type-C for iPhone 15? USB Type-C for iPhone 15 Apple's shift to USB Type-C is not entirely unexpected, and several factors contribute to this potential change: In 2020, the European Union passed a law requiring all devices with wired charging to include a USB Type-C port, enforceable from Autumn 2024. While this deadline is still a year away, early adoption might give Apple a strategic advantage in meeting compliance. Apple has already transitioned to USB Type-C with its iPads, and rumors suggest that the upcoming AirPods Pro could also adopt this standard. Noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has emphasised that Apple recognises the potential of USB Type-C. Compared to the lightning port's maximum speeds of 480 Mbps, USB Type-C can support up to 40 Gbps, making it potentially 80 times faster. Apple's lightning port, introduced in 2012, has served the company well in terms of royalties and licensing fees. However, the impending EU regulations and the limitations of a decade-old technology likely make a switch to USB Type-C more appealing. Apple iPhone 15 Series As explained above, Apple's potential transition to USB Type-C for the iPhone 15 Series marks a notable technological and strategic shift. Whether motivated by regulatory compliance, technological advancement, alignment with other products, or financial considerations, this change, if confirmed, signifies Apple's continuous drive to innovate and adapt. After all, the iPhone generates the most amount of revenue for Apple. As always, while the leaked images and analyst reports provide tantalising hints, the actual unveiling on September 13 will answer whether the iPhone 15 Series will indeed break away from tradition and embrace the USB Type-C era.
