SanDisk Mobile Storage Solution: Safe, Secure and Smart

SanDisk Mobile Storage

With mobile becoming the all-in-one device, storage always keeps running short of the requirement. But worry not! SanDisk, the global leader in storage solutions, is here with a range of advanced yet affordable storage products which would take care of all your storage needs!

India is in the cusp of digital metamorphosis and the key catalyst has been your hand held mobile device. By the time you read this article, the number of mobile subscribers in India would have zoomed past one billion subscriber milestone, given the fact that it had already crossed 999 million mark by end of March this year. And along with the superlative growth in the number of mobile subscribers, there has also been an implosion in data consumption which was first lit by the arrival of smartphones a decade back even as internet penetration was deepening. According to the latest forecast by research firm eMarketer, by the end of 2018, nearly 337 million Indians or more than a quarter of India’s population will be using a smartphone.

Smartphones provided a never before access to internet for common consumers which swelled data consumption. The great boost came with the launch of 4G services coupled with a sharp slide in data tariff. The Nokia MBiT Index 2018 found that an average mobile owner in India was using close to 11GB of data per month while overall data traffic grew at an astounding rate of 144% in 2017, which was far more than an Ericsson study had estimated sometime back. Falling tariff and faster internet has increased the appetite for data consumption among Indians.

That is one aspect of the mobile phenomenon. The other equally and perhaps more impressive story about mobile has been the way it has transformed and empowered an average consumer and transformed their lifestyle. A mobile today doubles up as one’s camera, video, jukebox, social adda, bank, locker, personal office, almost anything and everything one can think of. Little wonder, a mobile handset has become the most ubiquitous and dearest personal device ever to mankind. Nothing comes close to it, not even guns and roses! Mobile has also given birth to the craze called selfie, which is now acknowledged as a never before form of self expression. Mobile today is as much our life album as it is our mini workplace.

But then, all this burgeoning tasks require one critical element – STORAGE. Every time we download a video or click an image or save a document, it requires storage and eats into the limited space that a mobile handset has. Today, some people are taking more photographs in a day than a middle income family would have taken in their entire life just three decades back. Today more videos, more film clips are flying thick and fast from one whatsapp group to another than one watched in entire year a decade back. Some amazing clips takes less than five minutes to travel around the world and come back to the original post-man.

Photos and videos are the biggest space hoggers. And with camera megapixels ballooning every quarter, the file size of an average image in a midrange smartphone could range anywhere between 1MP to 5 MP while higher resolution images in premium phones easily go above 10 MP. And if one has one hour of video (it could also be 60 videos of one minute duration) stored in mobile, it can eat up to 11 GB of space. To top, one needs enough storage for all kinds of apps for the device to be running efficiently. A mid-range or premium smartphone today comes loaded with at least 20 apps. On their own, apps may not occupy much space but what you do with these apps could eat up space big way.

Space or storage constraint is a real big problem but who really wants to pay a bomb just to get some extra storage? For example, a premium high end phone with 64 GB ROM could cost around Rs 76,000/ but the same model with 256 ROM would cost approx Rs 85,000, all other specs remaing the same.  Similarly, a mid-range smartphone with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB ROM would cost around Rs 10,999 while the same model with 4GB RAM and 64 GB ROM could costs Rs 16,999, a big difference of Rs 6,000. There is an incremental rise in cost with every GB added.

Another big problem is the loss or damage to data. It can happen due to theft, loss or simply a device malfunction or device going bonkers. For millennials and Gen Z particularly, a loss of device can be a big personal and professional loss as they keep all kinds of data, some very personal, some very important, on their device. And some data loss like images from school reunion can be an irrecoverable loss – a treasure of memory gone in a flash!

In sort, managing storage space in our phones has become a real challenge, considering the speed at which we all are generating data. For most, deleting content seems to be the only way out of this sticky situation. Taking steps to protecting oneself for data loss is something that simply doesn’t occur to most of us. One reason is that most smartphone users are simply unaware of the means through which one can increase the space on phones even while using the phone. The problem is bigger in India. A recent mobile storage study done by YouGov revealed that.

  • 83% of Indians with a personal smartphone have run out of storage, with 29% of respondents running out of space at least once a week and 62% of respondents running out of space at least every three months.
  • 94% of Indian people have deleted files / data from their main smartphone in order to free up storage/memory, with 46% doing this at least once a week, and 77% deleting files at least once a month.
  • 67% of respondents in India are either fairly worried or very worried that the files and data on their smartphone is not secure.
  • 64% have lost a precious photo or video from their smartphone as a result of files not being backed up
  • 65% of Indians have regretted deleting a precious photo or video from their smartphone to free up storage/ memory
  • 36% of Indians would delete a photo of themselves before that of friends, pets, partners, children or parents
  • On average, Indians have 23 apps on their smartphones but only use 10 on a regular basis
  • On average, Indian respondents take an average of 31 photos and 14 videos a week on their smartphone.

  • 4 6% of Indians never back up files/data on their main smartphone
  • 46% of Indians back-up files / data on their main smartphone once a week or more than once a week.

Good news is that there are now rally good products which not only enhance the space on the phone instantaneously but also provides a safe and secure way to store your data. These highly sophisticated but convenient to use products are also portable and wireless. The real good thing is that they don’t cost a bomb! With the help of these devices, we can spare ourselves from the pain of deleting our precious memories to just create space on our phones.
