Chinese smartphone maker Tecno Mobile recently added three new smartphones- the Camon iAir2+, the Camon i2 and the Camon i2X, with AI camera features as their highlight. Out of the three, I got to spend some days with the Camon i2X to find out how exactly the smartphone is and this is what I think of it:
The Camon i2X is a pretty-looking smartphone with premium feels attached to it. From the three colour variants, namely, Aqua Blue, Champagne Gold and Midnight Black, I got the first one which made the device look extremely good. The light weight added to the nice built of the smartphone.
At the back, the Camon i2X has a vertically-stacked dual-camera module and LED flash at the top-left corner, followed by a fingerprint sensor and the company’s logo in the middle. At the front there is a notch which houses the front camera and the regular sensors. While the left side is left bare, the right side has a power on/off button and volume rocker. The bottom end has speaker grilles and micro-USB port, with the top part being blank.
For me, the Camon i2X scores pretty well in the looks department.
The Camon i2X comes with a huge 6.2-inch HD+ Super Full View Notch display with an aspect ratio rated at 19:9 for thin bezels. The display has adequate amount of brightness and the icons are fine too. The display settings come with several features such as Adaptive Brightness, Outdoor mode, and the inadvertently mode which prevents any action being performed while the device is in the pocket.
The main highlight of the Camon i2X is the camera department which houses two cameras at the back (13-megapixel and 5-megapixel) and a 16-megapixel front shooter, with support for AI-based features.
Starting with the rear camera, it performed quite decently and the resultant pictures were above average. The Bokeh, the Beauty mode and the Super Pixel camera features worked fine. However, I didn’t find the AI Cam feature too attractive. The front camera was a decent performer too, however, didn’t produce amazingly detailed images.
Overall, the cameras did a decent job but wasn’t that impressive.
Performance and Specifications
The Tecno Camon i2X is powered by a MediaTek MT6762 SoC, and gets its multi-tasking capabilities from 4GB of RAM. There is 64GB of inbuilt storage which can be further expanded up to 128GB via a microSD card. The daily smartphones chores (social media surfing, Google, Games and much more) were done with ease without much lag. But, the device did stammer after a while.
The 3,750mAh battery proved to be a decent fuel source for the device and lasted more than a day on a single charge. The company’s HiOS based on Android 8.1 Oreo led to a good UI with absence of bloatware.
Additionally, the facial recognition and the fingerprint scanner were pretty quick.
The Tecno Camon i2X, for Rs 12,499 has good amount of features added to it. However, the main USP isn’t really a highlight which might be a drawback for it. It stands in the ring against the OPPO Realme 1 with better RAM/ROM options and the ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M1 with a better processor. Let alone the not-so-impressive AI camera features, the Camon i2X is still a considerable option with a notched display, a fingerprint sensor and face unlock, all packed in an affordable package.
