Panasonic is expanding its Eluga series budget smartphones each month to be a dominant player in that segment. Previously, Panasonic had launched Eluga Ray 700 and 500 under the 10-K price category and these smartphones did well for the Japanese Electronics giant. The new offering, Eluga Ray 550, is also on the same lines of providing all the necessary specifications within the budget of the Indian buyers. For the first time, Panasonic has brought 18:9 aspect ratio smartphone under its belt. In this review we will shed light on the latest launch of the company, Eluga Ray 550.

Design

The new Eluga Ray 550 is the latest launch of the company which falls in budget smartphone section. The phone in its design has a tall display and is beautiful to look at. The phone is light and could be easily carried around and the compact size of the device adds to the benefits of the device which is that it could be used easily for long time. The front side of the device has selfie camera along with the front LED flash and the logo of the company is lying down at the bottom of the display. The back panel is sporting the rear camera with LED flash and just below the camera lies the fingerprint sensor. The rear panel also has the speaker grille as well. At the right side of the device lies the volume rockers and the power button. At the left side of the device lies the SIM tray which is capable of holding dual SIMs and microSD card. At the top of the device lies the 3.5mm headphone jack and the bottom of the device is having the micro USB port.

Display

The new ELuga Ray 550 has an impressive display size as well with that of 5.7 inch HD+ screen. The aspect ratio of the screen is of 18:9 which is offering big view display to the users. The display size and the HD ability of the device is impressive in a budget smartphone which will attract the buyers for sure. The display provides you enough space and viewing angles to watch and enjoy everything with great clarity and wide viewing angles. The screen is protected by 2.5D glass.

Platform

The processes of the new Eluga Ray 550 are being handled by 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek MTK6737H SoC processor. The processor is quite powerful and it handles the heavy applications with ease and the multi-tasking seems to exert no issue on the phone. The Eluga Ray 550  is having 3GB RAM which together with processor let the users to use any application without any hesitation of the phone getting hang or too much worked up. The new Eluga Ray 550 has 32GB internal storage which is to make users store many applications and games. Users can store any game, applications or any media with ease. The storage can be expanded further with the help of microSD card upto 128GB.  The Eluga Ray 550 is having Android 7.0 Nougat operating system.

Cameras

The camera power offered by the new Eluga Ray 550 is very impressive as well in budget range smartphone. The phone has 13 MP auto focus rear camera with LED flash. The images captured by the rear camera in daytime are very well detailed and the colours of the images are well saturated and kept in appropriate proportion with no distortion. The LED flash when used during dark conditions may induce some graining effect in the images but for a budget smartphone it is very good. There are various modes to opt for while clicking the images and also there are various filters as well to allow you to induce any effect according to your mood. The new Eluga Ray 550 has impressive selfie camera as well which is of 8MP plus it has the front LED flash and this is something mostly not found in budget smartphones. The selfies taken at day and well lighted conditions are well clear and crisp. The selfies taken at night are clear as well but there might be some occasions when it will show little bit of graining. Overall the cameras of the ELuga Ray 550 are very impressive and it is like a bonus in a budget smartphone section which might play the trick for the success of this phone.

Battery

The battery capability of the new Eluga Ray 550 is of 3,250 mAh which is enough power to make you use your device for a long time without plugging it in charging. The battery last throughout the day if it is used moderately. The charging speed is also quite decent due to the power of the charger which is not fast charger but still do the trick to some extent. The phone do get heated up while charging but after getting filled to its limit, the heat of the device gets lessen down and restores back to its original normal state.

In terms of connectivity, there is 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.1, GPS/ A-GPS, FM radio, and Micro-USB port. Sensors on board include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, magnetometer, and proximity sensor. The smartphone also has a rear-facing fingerprint sensor.

Conclusion

The new Eluga Ray 550 from Panasonic is well packaged smartphone with 18:9 display to body ratio, 13 MP rear lens along with an 8 MP selfie camera as well. The processor is smart enough to handle the tasks with ease. Priced at Rs 8,999, the Eluga Ray surely becomes one of the top contenders under 10-K segment. It has to compete with the likes of Redmi 5 at this price point.
