Strengthening further its F series, OPPO has added another new member to its F series genealogical chart with the launch of OPPO F17 Pro. The F series of OPPO has always been a top competitor in the mid-range segment and the F17 Pro is all set to carry on the same legacy with the latest technological innovations ranging from Super AMOLED display to Flash Charge. We will guide you through the various features of the new OPPO F17 Pro and will see whether it has the power or not to emerge out as one of the top performers in the highly competitive Indian smartphone market.
OPPO F17 strikes the users quite significantly with its sleek design which is just 7.48mm in terms of thickness. The sleek body has lightweight as well which makes the phone very comfortable to use and the curved edges further allow better grip allowing you to use the phone for a longer time. The variant which we got to review holds the magic blue glossy body finish and interestingly the glossy body finish does not attract too much of smudges. At the front side of the phone, you get to see the huge display with dual punch-hole selfie sensors. At the rear side lies the quad-camera set up in a rectangular frame with slightly outwards camera sensors also there is a dual-LED flash lying next to the camera frame. The placement of the buttons is the same as every phone form OPPO where the power button lies at the right side and the left side lies the volume rockers with a dual SIM tray that has a dedicated microSD card slot. The top side of the phone is blank whereas at the bottom side lies a 3.5mm headphone jack, Type-C USB port, and the speaker. The fingerprint sensor is placed on the display which is lightning fast in response. The face unlocks feature of the phone is also very accurate and works nicely even in dim lighting conditions.
OPPO F17 Pro comes with a 6.43 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with the screen capable of 16M color reproduction. The screen has a 1080×2400 pixels resolution and has an aspect ratio of 20:9. The aspect ratio offers wide viewing angles which becomes very handy and incorporates every detail while playing games and watching any videos. The colors produced on the screen are very vibrant, vivid, and punchy. The screen is quite bright and you can easily view the screen under bright daylight.
The six AI cameras of the OPPO F17 Pro are well equipped with abilities to capture good images. The camera section of the phone is one of the main USP on which the company is cashing in. OPPO has allocated four AI camera sensors at the rear side and two at the front in a punch-hole design. Talking about the rear camera sensors first which when tested delivered images of high quality with fine details. The color preservation level of nature was on point as we did not see any overshadowing or over saturation of the images captured. The daylight shots were very vibrant and crisp. The AI does its job quite well as it quickly focusses on the object you are capturing and refining all the details. The macro lens does a very good job capturing every fine detail and maintained the proper color saturation level. The ultrawide lens with its 119-degree angle manages to take into account the wide range of details. The low lighting photography from OPPO F17 Pro is quite good and over the period, we have seen that OPPO has improved in that section. The images captured at night were quite good and the AI surely helps to refine the quality of the images which were captured. The noise effect was at the minimum level and becomes very obvious only when the resolution was increased. The ultrawide lens at night also does a very decent job and the saturation level of the images was also very good. The Night mode available lends a helping hand when you want to do intense photography at night. The four AI rear camera sensors have the following configuration where the primary sensor is a 48MP wide lens with an aperture of f/1.7 and PDAF. The secondary sensor is an 8MP ultrawide lens with an aperture of f/2.2. The third sensor is a 2MP macro lens with an aperture of f/2.4. The fourth sensor is a 2MP depth sensor with an aperture of f/2.4. At the front, the dual selfie camera sensor has the following configuration where the main sensor is a 16MP wide lens and the second sensor is a depth sensor of 2MP. The new OPPO F17 Pro is surely a treat for selfie lovers. The AI-enabled selfie sensor quickly adjusts to the face and captures brilliant selfies. The AI does not interfere with the selfies and does not over beautify them. At night the quality of the selfie camera does go down but still the selfies are decent.
OPPO F17 Pro runs on top of Android 10 with ColorOS 7.2 and it is an updated version of Color OS 7.1. The 7.2 OS was also seen in the previous launch of OPPO which was OPPO Reno 4 Pro. In the new OS, all the banned applications in India are excluded.
OPPO F17 Pro is powered by MediaTek Helio P95 processor which is quite surprising to see because, in comparison to Qualcomm Snapdragon processors like 765, 730, 725 the P95 Helio processor falls short in terms of overall performance. The processor easily handles all the tasks be it multitasking or playing games. The graphics quality of the OPPO F17 Pro is good and with some minor adjustments it runs games like PUBG, COD, Asphalt smoothly but the Adreno 612 or 625 graphics GPU works more efficiently with Qualcomm Snapdragon processors like 765 and 730. The phone has 8GB of RAM which boosts up the working of the processor enabling to it work efficiently. The internal storage is 128GB which is expandable. Using MediaTek Helio P95 processor by OPPO in the new F17 Pro is not understandable to me. The processor in terms of competition surely lags behind.
OPPO F17 runs on battery power of 4,000mAh. The battery capacity of the phone hints that it endures all the tasks throughout the day and when tested the phone was able to last a day with a single charge with a moderate level of gaming hours and watching videos. The battery performance of the phone also goes down when compared to that of phones powered by Snapdragon processors. The phone supports VOOC 4.0 Flash charge and has a 30W charger to deliver the flash charge.
OPPO F17 Pro is a smartly placed device in the mid-segment with mediocre specifications. Although it’s slim and lightweight because of the plastic material used but in a smartphone which is priced at Rs 22,990 is simply out of proportion in the current context. The screen vividness is superb but minus 90Hz refresh rate even though the government has banned PUBG, there are video contents available that require a higher refresh rate. The combo of six cameras with good photography saves the day for F17 Pro. The MediaTek Helio P95 proves to be a sufficient chipset and works fine with 8GB RAM combination. The battery is enough for a day in moderate usage whereas charging speed is pretty good.
I believe that India is now a very much mature market where people can be very specific about specifications versus price and competition. OPPO has been simply off track with F17 Pro product packaging when its sister concern has already launched OnePlus Nord with better features.
