Coolpad Cool 6 Review: Good hardware but average camera

Coolpad cool 6

Smartphone has become a necessity nowadays, and with so many brands and offerings, it is difficult to decide on the one for you. With so many brands around there is one brand that is making a name for itself, and that is Coolpad.

The company has recently launched its new smartphone the Coolpad Cool 6 in October 2020 and the phone comes with a 6.53-inch touchscreen display. Coolpad Cool 6 is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio P70 processor. It comes with 4GB and 6GB of RAM. The Coolpad Cool 6 runs Android 10 and is powered by a 4000mAh battery.

The smartphone is based on Android 10 with dual-SIM with connectivity options like Wi-Fi, GPS, USB OTG, USB Type-C, 3G, and 4G. Sensors on the phone include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, and fingerprint sensor.

The Coolpad Cool 6 was launched in Blue and Silver colors and available around the price of Rs 12,999. Let us have a look at the detailed specifications of the all-new Coolpad Cool 6.

Design and Display

Coolpad has made a name for itself in the budget segment with the Coolpad Mega and Coolpad Cool series. The new Coolpad Cool 6 smartphone is another similar budget offering that flaunts a 6.53-inch LCD screen with an FHD 1080 x 1920 resolution. The phone sports a unique edge-to-edge design without any notches as there’s a pop-up selfie camera. This unique no-notch and no-bezel design are one of the best highlights, especially for the asking price. The backside of the smartphone is made of plastic and merges colors for the rear panel, the only issue with the back is that leaves fingerprint impressions, so it gives away the cheap feeling. The vertical placement of cameras and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor make up most of the back panel.

If we talk about the UI of the phone, it is quite easy but boring, it does not have many themes to choose from. The Coolpad’s UI was buggy at first, but it’s stable as of writing this review.

Design-wise, the phone looks good, the fingerprint sensor lies on the back, along with the dual-camera module as well. It’s got a wide form factor, so you won’t find it easy to use one-handed. However, it’s possible, unless you’re trying to type messages or reach the top half of the screen. You won’t have to shift your grip to reach the power button or volume rocker, which are on the right side.

The only build issue we found was with the SIM tray. The tray would stick when trying to eject using the SIM removal tool. If you look at it closely, it’s evident that the tray doesn’t fit properly, with a noticeable wobble. It’s supposed to sit flush with the phone’s frame but is actually depressed into it. This could be trouble over extended usage, with the SIM tray being stuck, refusing to fit properly, or losing SIM connectivity in the future.

The phone is not thick or heavy and fits fine in your pocket!

The Coolpad’s Cool 6 comes in two variants 4GB/64GB and 6GB/128GB, and if talk about how much RAM is required in a budgeted smartphone, it is enough! The smartphone offers exactly what you need to have within budget, but if you want a little more than you might have to consider something else.

Coolpad Cool 6 is capable of handling all your smartphone tasks. The processor even enhances the overall performance as well. However, one might face a bit of a lag when it comes to gaming or multitasking

The Coolpad Play 6 is quite fast, however, more RAM gives you some longevity, its near term effects are hardly discernible. The MediaTek Helio P70 chipset gives high performance but there will be some lags here and there, and app load times are quite fast.

The smartphone does feel warm at times, without even using it for long hours. If you are playing games or watching movies at a stretch it feels a tad warm and uncomfortable.

Overall, you get a fast phone, with little to no question.

The Coolpad Cool 6 comes with a triple camera setup at the back and a pop-up selfie camera in the front.

It includes a 48MP primary camera, a 2MP macro shooter, and a 2MP depth sensor. For selfies, there’s a pop-up 21MP sensor in a pop-up module. The camera sensors feature HDR, Panorama, and AI camera features that enable it to click some good photos, at least in good lighting. The pop-up camera is probably one of the highlights, which can also take some good shots.

The smartphone takes good photos when you’re shooting in well-lit conditions, but Coolpad’s phone is somewhat behind on indoor and low light shooting capabilities. Also, it produces somewhat desaturated colors across the board. We found that images were sharp and reasonably detailed in proper lighting, but shadow details aren’t very well represented. In low light, images are marred by noise and become quite grainy. In the more difficult low light scenarios, the smartphone often darkens entire sections of the frame, making images unusable. Details are lost, and images are still dull.

The pictures are good but far from perfect!

Overall, while the Coolpad Cool 6 has a decent camera, there’s certainly room for improvement. The camera is also slow to focus and process photos, making it difficult to take back-to-back photos. You will also miss moments with this phone.

The Coolpad Cool 6 comes with a non-removable Li-Ion 4000 mAh battery, which runs the whole day, nothing extraordinary about the battery. It takes about two hours to charge fully and lasts for a whole day unless you’re using the camera for long or playing games. Phone calls don’t drain the battery very easily.

The only problem is the amount of time it takes to charge fully, given this price segment most of the smartphones comes with fast charging. But this phone only gives you a quick charging.

The Coolpad Cool 6 is not a complete package but it a dependable smartphone. But the competition is getting tougher; there are already brands in the market that offer far more than this in the same segment, but with good performance and fair battery life the smartphone puts a lot of brands at par!

The Coolpad Cool 6 is a good smartphone and recommended only to those who want to have a good looking and performance packed phone in the same segment, without any expectations.
