OpenAI has announced the OpenAI Learning Accelerator, a new India initiative aimed at transforming education with artificial intelligence. The program focuses on enhancing AI research, training, and deployment for both educators and students across the country.

As part of this initiative, the San Francisco-based AI company is offering five lakh free ChatGPT licenses and dedicated funding support. This announcement comes shortly after OpenAI revealed its plans to set up its first India office by the end of 2025.

“We believe AI has incredible potential to empower educators and learners. To realize that potential, we must work side by side with educators and institutions. This effort is critical to OpenAI’s mission of ensuring AGI benefits humanity—and as such, the launch of OpenAI Learning Accelerator alongside our partners, represents one of OpenAI’s most significant investments in India’s education ecosystem to date,” said Leah Belsky, VP of Education, OpenAI

“There is huge potential to work closely with educators and institutions across India, and I’m thrilled to join OpenAI to lead our educational initiatives here and across the APAC region,” said Raghav Gupta, OpenAI’s newly appointed Head of Education for India and Asia Pacific. “By working closely with universities, schools, government bodies, and educators, we have an opportunity to truly transform education through AI, driving better learning outcomes, while supporting India’s ambitions to be a global leader in AI-enabled education.”

$500,000 Funding for IIT Madras AI Research

In its official blog post, OpenAI confirmed a $500,000 (approximately Rs. 4.3 crore) grant for IIT Madras. Under this collaboration, IIT Madras will explore how AI can be leveraged to boost learning outcomes and create new teaching methodologies.

The research will cover areas including pedagogy and cognitive neuroscience. Importantly, the findings will be shared publicly to support the development of future AI-driven educational tools.

Empowering Teachers and Students with AI Literacy

The initiative is designed to help both students and educators integrate AI meaningfully into learning. OpenAI stated that the widespread adoption of ChatGPT in India should focus on “building critical thinking skills and deepening learning instead of being used as a shortcut tool.”

Through partnerships with key education stakeholders, OpenAI will provide five lakh ChatGPT licenses along with training programs tailored to the Indian education system. The company will also roll out AI literacy initiatives to help educators and students better understand and apply the technology.

Collaboration with Indian Education Institutions

As part of its collaboration with the Ministry of Education, OpenAI will extend ChatGPT access to government school teachers, enabling lesson planning, student engagement, and improved learning outcomes.

Additionally, OpenAI has partnered with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to bring ChatGPT access to technical institutes, strengthening digital skills, employability, and practical AI applications. The company is also working with All Round Improvement in School Education (ARISE) schools, which primarily serve underprivileged students, to provide educators with ChatGPT access.

Each partner institution will co-develop training programs with OpenAI, focusing on AI literacy for both students and teachers. Students will also gain access to specialised educational tools including ChatGPT’s Study Mode to support learning.
