Nokia confirms facial recognition update on select smartphones

The Finnish tech giant HMD Global that manufactures Nokia branded smartphones has now announced to roll out the popular security patch, the face unlock feature on select handsets. For the past one year, face unlock feature has turned out very popular mode of security among the users.

Nokia 8, Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 plus and Nokia 6.1 are some of the smartphones, which will be furnished with face unlock update. The application of the update will vary upon the hardware potentials of these handsets. According to some experts, face unlock feature that is quite similar to clicking selfies is actually less protected than the conventional fingerprint sensor.

It is also speculated that the recently launched Nokia X6 with notched display would be equipped with face unlock feature, although there is no official confirmation on the same. The feature gained popularity when iPhone X was launched with face unlock last year. Same as Apple, Android products also utilizes dot project, infrared camera and flood illuminator and even Samsung, one of the leading smarthone manufacturer in the world also uses infra red camera for its facial recognition.

Nokia announced that to enable this feature on Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 plus, Nokia 8 and Nokia 6.1 the company will make use of CPU, image signal chipset, and selfie camera. It is also expected that the old Nokia smartphone will not have this feature as it is fueled by slow chipsets.
