DoT, NDMC organises joint EMF awareness programme on EMF Emissions, Telecom Towers

New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications organised a joint EMF awareness programme on Electromagnetic Field (EMF) Emissions and Telecom Towers. It was a public outreach programme to dispel myths about EMF Emissions and quell unfounded fears of citizens through scientific evidence.

ShriSunil Kumar, Director General (Telecom), DoT, Government of Indiastated, “Scientific evidences available in the public domain do not support any harmful EMF radiation from mobile towers. In fact, the radiation norms in India are well below the safe limits prescribed by the International Commission on Non-ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO).”

Stressing upon the need of installation of required number of towers in various localities for best wireless connectivity and Quality of Service (QoS), Shri Sunil Kumarsought for a greater public support. He also highlighted the relevance of mobile connectivity across the States and emphasizing on the need of cultivating a scientific temper and deepening collaboration between the public, Government and industry for the growth of the nation.

Geetali Tare, Financial Adviser, NDMC stated that, “NDMC aims to drive economic growth and improves the quality of life of people in New Delhi by harnessing technology. Such awareness programs act as a confidence-building step between the authorities and the public and help in removing the prevailing myths in the minds of public. He emphasisedthe urgent need to bridge the gap between the DoT, local bodies, public and other stakeholders of the society for aearly resolution of the issues for a rapid growth of telecom infrastructure which will help in providing seamless connectivity to residents of Delhi.”

The mobile towers around NDMC Convention centre were also tested and the tests revealed that the emission from these cell towers were well within the prescribed DoT norms. The testing was conducted and the results were shared with the people present at the sites, stating that all towers are safe, substantiated by the low levels of radiation, that showed up in the tests. In fact, the EMF Emission level from tower monitored in the location was NDMC Civic Centre, New Delhi of the limits set by the DoT, well below the prescribed limits. The level of EMF emissions is as under:

 The awareness workshop concluded that towers in Delhi-NCR are safe and TERM Cell is fully committed and equipped to ensure compliance of guidelines is designed for safeguarding our citizens. The workshop ended with some interactive Q&A session between senior government officials, Doctors and participants including resident of RWA’s, representatives of MWA’s, officials of various Municipal bodies.
