Xiaomi overtakes Samsung as leading Smartphone brand in India in Q4 2017; Reliance Jio leads feature phone segment

Xiaomi has overtaken Samsung as the leading smartphone brand in Q4 2017 in terms of shipment. The Chinese OEM has been having an amazing run in Indian smartphone, largely driven by its value-for-money proposition.

Reliance Jio has emerged as the leading feature phone brand by capturing 25% market share within a quarter of its launch driven by attractive bundle offers.

Samsung, however, remains the market leader in both segment on annual basis according to latest Counterpoint’s Market Monitor Research. But it is clear that long held dominance of Samsung is being challenged robustly.

Overall India mobile phones crossed 300 Million units for the first time ever with smartphones capturing almost 44% of the total volumes in CY 2017.

Commenting on the competitive landscape, Tarun Pathak, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research said, “The competitive landscape has change significantly in the last one year with the rise of brands such as Xiaomi, OPPO, VIVO in smartphone segment and players such as Reliance Jio, Nokia HMD and iTel in feature phone segment disrupting the market with high quality and low-cost offerings. During the second half, players such as Xiaomi disrupted the status quo with an aggressive priced broader portfolio with effective channel expansion strategy. This helped Xiaomi to surpass the long-reigned market leader Samsung for the first time ever in a quarter ending the Korean vendor’s streak of market dominance of six years.”

Mr. Pathak highlighting on the still important featurephone segment, added, “Reliance Jio captured 26% share in featurephone segment in just one quarter with its disruptive offering in terms of the overall value proposition compared to the normal 2G featurephone but at almost zero cost while introducing most of the voice users to 4G LTE capabilities.4G featurephone segment is 200 million units opportunity by volume over the next five years tapping into hundreds of millions of featurephone user base in India. While Jiophone saw healthy sell-in during the quarter but we believe the operator exited the quarter with some inventory which could affect the share in coming quarters.”
