OpenAI has started rolling out its long-awaited age verification system, which was first announced in September 2025. The company says the new system ensures additional safety protections against potentially harmful interactions for underage users. Here’s more on that.
OpenAI’s Age Verification System Goes Live
In a blog post, OpenAI confirmed that the age verification system is now being rolled out globally. However, the European Union (EU) is where it will be introduced in the coming weeks due to regional regulatory requirements.
The system mainly targets teenagers and minors who may bypass safety restrictions by entering a false date of birth during signup. OpenAI noted that its teen safety settings are designed to limit sensitive content and restrict exposure to certain types of interactions.
According to the company, the age verification system continuously analyses user activity across accounts, tracking signals such as discussion topics and typical usage times to infer a user’s actual age. OpenAI acknowledged that the system is not flawless and may occasionally misclassify adult users as being under 18. In such cases, the platform automatically applies non-removable safety settings by default once an account is flagged.
With teen safety settings enabled, users can still ask questions, create content, and learn using ChatGPT. However, access will be restricted for content involving graphic violence or gore, risky or harmful viral challenges, sexual, romantic, or violent role play, as well as material that promotes extreme beauty standards, unhealthy dieting, or body shaming.
To address incorrect classifications, OpenAI is offering adult users a way to verify their age. This process is conducted in partnership with Persona, a third-party online identity verification service. Users will be required to upload a live selfie along with a government-issued ID.
As stated in the post, “Persona checks your date of birth and that your selfie matches your ID photo.” Once verification confirms the user is an adult, the restrictions are removed, although OpenAI cautioned there may be a short delay before changes take effect.
OpenAI also clarified that users can conceal other personal details on their ID, as only the photo, name, and date of birth are required. Since Persona handles the verification process, OpenAI itself does not have access to the documents. The company added that both the ID and selfie are deleted within seven days of verification.
OpenAI’s First AI Device May Be an Audio Headset
Separately, a new report has shed light on OpenAI’s upcoming hardware plans. According to ITHome, citing Taiwan’s Economic Daily News, OpenAI’s first consumer device is expected to be an AI-powered audio headset. The report claims that the much-rumoured AI Pen will not be the company’s first hardware product, although it could still be part of OpenAI’s longer-term roadmap.
It also suggests that OpenAI is targeting shipments of 40–50 million units in the first year, indicating strong internal confidence in the product’s potential.
Earlier this week, OpenAI’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, Chris Lehane, reportedly stated that the company’s first AI device would be unveiled in the second half of the year.
However, it may not reach the market in 2026, as Jony Ive had previously indicated that a 2027 launch timeline is more realistic. Another report also noted that OpenAI is still finalising its vendor partner and manufacturing location.
