YouTube is introducing its AI-based age estimation system across the US. First revealed last month, the tool uses artificial intelligence to predict if a user might be under 18, factoring in things like YouTube watch history, search patterns, and how long the account has existed. The system applies to every YouTube account, no matter what birthdate was entered at sign-up.

If the AI determines you’re likely a minor, you’ll see an alert letting you know. You can dispute the result by confirming your age with a government ID, a selfie, or even a credit card.

For accounts tagged as teen users, YouTube will automatically switch on safety-focused settings. These include the following –

  • Showing only ads that aren’t personalised
  • Enabling “take a break” prompts and bedtime reminders by default
  • Displaying privacy warnings before posting comments or uploading videos
  • Limiting recommendations for videos that could be harmful if watched repeatedly

The platform’s long-standing rule remains in place, which states that you must be at least 18 to watch videos marked as age-restricted.

Why YouTube’s Age Detection Facing Backlash?

While the aim is to protect younger viewers, critics say the AI could mislabel adults based on a handful of viewing habits.

“I let my cousins’ kids watch some of their shows when I’m babysitting them, and I don’t care to give my ID to YouTube, especially since I have had a Google account for like 20 odd years now,” one Reddit user complained.

Others worry about the privacy risks of uploading official IDs.

“With this rise of AI and increased demand for users’ personal information, I truly believe that the internet will be so fundamentally different in 5 years that parts of it will simply become broken,” another user wrote.

YouTube says ID verification is optional. Those who skip it will still be able to use the site, but with teen protections in place. Teen accounts can view most of YouTube’s content, except for age-restricted videos containing heavy violence or nudity.

YouTube also insists that a single type of content isn’t enough to flag someone as underage.

“Pokémon, Minecraft, Anime, and Roblox are for everyone! We understand that users on YouTube have a variety of interests. Our age estimation model does not look at one form of content in isolation to determine if an account is under the age of 18. The model assesses many different signals to reach this determination, including but not limited to YouTube activity and longevity across a user’s account. It is not focused on any specific genre or type of video,” the company explained.
