Idea returns to the device segment with Idea Ivory. But is the stylish looking, reasonably priced device good enough to stand up to some very stiff competition?

Looks: Normal yet stylish

The first thing that you notice about the Idea Ivory is how light it is. The back panel of the phone is plain and is surrounded by a silver ribbon on all sides, which gives it a very classy look. The body is of plastic and the corners are round which makes the phone easy to hold. The front of the device is dominated by a 3.5-inch display, with three soft keys for back, options and home; while the back panel houses a 3.2-megapixel camera and speakers. The top of the phone has the display lock/ unlock button, which is also used to switch on the phoneand a 3.5 mm audio jack slot. The charging slot is on the left side and the volume rocker on the right side of the handset. The phone is available in two colour variants: black and white.

Hardware: Good for the price

The phone comes with a 3.5-inch capacitive TFT display and supports dual SIM (GSM + GSM) functionality. It is powered by 1GHz dual core processor and comes with 512MB RAM, and 4GB internal memory which can be expanded up to 32GB. It comes with a 3.2-megapixel rear camera, and on the connectivity front offers 3G, Wi-Fi, GPRS, A-GPS, WLAN and Bluetooth.

Software: Ice Cream Sandwich

The smartphone runs on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) operating system. It has five home panels, which can be customised with widgets and app shortcuts. The homescreen also has shortcuts for calling, contacts, menu and messaging. The device has some pre-loaded apps like Facebook, Twitter, IMAP, HTML, Music Video Player, Documents to Go and POP3 mail support.

Multimedia: Good sound and images

The Idea Ivory has a 3.2-megapixel rear camera, which takes decent pictures in daylight. The audio quality was good as well, but the video player was not able to play HD videos well. The music quality of the phone is good, whether heard on loudspeakers or on headphones. The on board FM radio has good reception and the sound is again very good.

User Experience: Fine

Keeping in mind its price, the Idea Ivory is a very decent option. The touch of the phone is exceptional and the voice quality over calls is also very good. That said, we would have appreciated a display with a higher resolution and the battery backup of the phone was not the greatest – we had to recharge it at least once a day with normal use.

Review Overview

  • Good capacitive touch
  • Dual core processor

  • Low screen resolution
  • Battery could have been better

The Idea Ivory is a very good option for anyone looking for a smartphone with a relatively large display and decent processor. The phone is available for Rs. 7,390. Those looking for alternatives in the same budget range can consider the LG L3, which is available for Rs 7,500.
